Can I use a 2nd Gen master cyclinder on a 1st gen?

Yes you can use the 2nd gen, but I'd personally look for something better like '06- newer radial from another bike (Yami, Kawi...). YMMV. The second gen master isn't much better/ different than the first.

If I use a radial master cylinder from a more modern sport bike, do I have to change anything else with the brakes?

No, but the banjo bolt may not fit so you have to use the one that comes with that m/c.

Stay away from the '04-'05 GSXR radials.

Personally, I've used standard m/c on my SV's and been very happy with the '01-'03 GSXR m/c's.

Currently, I use a Brembo radial and did on my race SV before I sold it.
