Arrested for being drunk at a bar?

Texas busting drunks ... in bars

Thursday, March 23, 2006; Posted: 9:56 a.m. EST (14:56 GMT)

Manage Alerts | What Is This? SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) -- Texas has begun sending undercover agents into bars to arrest drinkers for being drunk, a spokeswoman for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said Wednesday.

The first sting operation was conducted recently in a Dallas suburb where agents infiltrated 36 bars and arrested 30 people for public intoxication, said the commission's Carolyn Beck.

Being in a bar does not exempt one from the state laws against public drunkenness, Beck said.

The goal, she said, was to detain drunks before they leave a bar and go do something dangerous like drive a car.

"We feel that the only way we're going to get at the drunk driving problem and the problem of people hurting each other while drunk is by crackdowns like this," she said.

"There are a lot of dangerous and stupid things people do when they're intoxicated, other than get behind the wheel of a car," Beck said. "People walk out into traffic and get run over, people jump off of balconies trying to reach a swimming pool and miss."

She said the sting operations would continue throughout the state.

I believe this is both a good attribute and bad. Good because some lives might actually get saved out of this. Some of you all might get mad for me posting this but most of you may not have had your father, uncle, or even your mother, or your kids loose their life because someone had one too many coors lite, ( or what ever ). It's bad because who can really judge when a person is drunk or not, how can we tell that the Poe, Poe's won't abuse their bar power? The pro's and con's of our hard earned money that we pay through tax's to have this so called service.

Being drunk on private property is a bit different that being drunk in public. In a bar, you're in public. Contrary to popular belief, it's ILLEGAL to be drunk in public.

I was almost positive bars were privately owned bussineses. This sounds like a lawyers field day to me. So, I can no longer take a cab to a bar, get wasted and get a cab ride home? This sounds like gestapo to me!

they are privately owned, but it's still a general public........esp. if there's no cover charge.

Yes. The server holds a lot of responsibilty for over-serving. The problem is, the money clouds their judgement.
