Question Service/Maintance Q's

So I just called the Kawi dealer and they said the "1st Service" for one of my bikes is like $300. The bike just hit 500 miles and has never been serviced... is that normal? Should this be something I could do on my own?

BTW - The bike is an '07 Kawi 500

Second question, my other bike ('08 Kawi 500) has about 3500 miles on it and I dont know how it was taken care of before and the dealer said $360 for service on it too... before someone attacks me - YES I have looked at the recommened service/maintance for the bike but I dont understand what the heck all that means - cars/trucks I understand, bikes is completly new to me.

Would anyone mind telling me if the $300 cost at the dealer is a rip or if this is something I should expect to pay and its not something I could do myself???

I believe it is for an oil and filter change, spark plugs changes and the sync. on the carbs. checked. you can do this stuff at your home for less than 100.00.

Or take it to Patrick at Motorcycles Unlimited. He takes care of all my service, including "first service".

Katy/NW - my dad was going to help us w/ it this wkend - he's a master mechanic and has had bikes all his life BUT he didnt have time before he left town, sucks for us :(

I am told and from what I read it is suppose to be easy - but like I said I am new to bikes and dont really know that I feel very comfortable doing this stuff and I worry about messing it up - at the same time though I dont want to look like a little girl that cant work on her own bike
