i talked to him a couple years ago and asked him about it. he also said that at first he thought it had started to rain with drops on his shield till his junk started to get hot. bailed off the back at over 100mph.

No, actually there wasn't. The fuel cap backed out and gas worked it's way out and ignited. His mechanics were trust trying to tell him he should go faster, lol.
