Meh, I am 6'4" with a 36" inseam and started on a rebel 250 (which is smaller than most 250's) and rode it for 6K miles. I had no problems with the bike other than my knees started hurting all the time. I rode the rebel at my MSF course and thought it would be fine.
I think Squoddybody's boy Dangermouse is as tall as us and also started on the rebel and had similar leg issues. He quickly moved up though.
Also you will look like a giant on a 250, but who really cares about that.
Be careful on your choice, but as others have said you won't be stuck with it if you end up hating it. Just don't buy new (yeah, I know that is out of your price range for anything, but a pocket bike).

how does 1 learn when "you" have no bike experience........what if he "thinks" a gsxr1000 is within reason, does it make it a good idea?

+1! i was one of these people. i started on a ninja 250 and am really glad i did. it has nothing to do with your size in my opinion - it's all about learning and getting comfortable with throttle control and maneuvering on two wheels.

i moved up to a 600 rather quickly, but believe me i wish i would have held on to the 250. they're fun to ride and hold their value pretty well.

but on the other hand, i know people who have started out on a 500 or 600 and have been just fine. are you a fast learner? are you mature enough to know your limitations and respect the bike?

good luck with your decision, which ever route you choose

I know that I'm mature enough to handle the power of a larger bike, and I could care less about the lower power of a 250. It's the size of the bike that I'm worried about, but since I'll be on a 250 at the MSF that will be my chance to try it out. We'll see how I like it. Thanks for all the advice guys.

After some research it seems it was one of the best bikes you could buy back in it's day, but how hard would parts be to come by? The bike has 28,000 miles or so, and was dropped once so he replaced some plastic and painted the whole thing black. It's lowered a few inches but I understand that throws off the whole steering geometry of the bike, plus I'm fairly tall at 6'3, so that would need to be put back to stock. My cousin rode it a few months ago around the block and didn't notice any problems, but then again that was at low speeds. It's been sitting for a few months so apparently it's having some fuel issues, but carburetor and small engine repair is nothing new to me. KBB trade in is just over $1900. What's a fair price?

I want to take time to rant on something I hear alot of people say(both sides of the spectrum)

I hear people say, Oh, Im a bigger guy so I need a 1000, or oh, Im a smaller girl so I need a 600..

yall DO realize its the same bike with a different motor in it right?

as far as the 250's being smaller, if they are, its not by much. Id suggest a 500, I own one and have been riding for several years. Ive owned eveything from this 500 to a 1000, and have ridden 1300r's

bang for your buck, this 500 does everything. Its great around town, it will get you into trouble on the highway, you can ride it all day without you back killing you, and if you baby it, it will get you 60 mpg.

so, um. yeah, Im done.

I just checked, the gsxr 1000 has a 1410mm wheelbase

the "tiny" ninja 250, 1400.

a whopping 10 mm longer.

Get yourself an older enduro, I started on a tw200 for example. You can pick them up cheap and learn to ride dirt and street at the same time. Its amazing what learning to ride in the dirt can teach you about street riding, ie. emergency braking, sliding, cornering and all that. Plus if you drop it it doesn't really matter, and they run forever. I got a 99 DR350 for 2k in mint condition. There are tons of xr250's, klr400&650s out there just find one on Craigslist. Plus you can wheelie the out of them when you get better, and if the cops are after you you can bust into the woods or many bayous. Just my opinion but they are all around bad bikes. I sold my stunter for an enduro and ride it everyday.

hmm.......and to think in '01 that was "race" geometry and in '09 the same geometry is "relaxed" gotta love marketing.........

if that we're teh case i'd imagine it'd be on sale for $3500-4000 vs $2500 and yet still hasn't sold. so is it really worth that much........

agreed
