its safer to fear those things that might do bodily harm; I say it's safer to own those things that might to bodily harm and use them to keep you safer.

You can get pretty decent deals out there for new bikes, I think it is a little bit overpriced but that's just me.

If indeed it is your first bike, have you considered used bikes? The way the market is, people are selling stuff that is in pretty good shape (low miles). I believe it is better to buy use because chances are that you will drop the bike, and I am not being negative nor giving you a hard time just telling as it is.

Regarding the bikes, you can't go wrong with either brand all of them have really good bikes. Try to see if you can schedule demo rides or ride a bike of your friend to see if you feel comfortable on it.
