No and yes. When traffic is like a parking lot. But you get who try and block you that don't understand that you are sweating under your gear in the hot sun while they enjoy their AC.

I was under the impression that while it isn't specifically legal in Texas, it is not defined as illegal.

If it is not codified as illegal, then it is legal.

It is illegal. Don't have the code on me, but it refers to no more than 1 vehicle per lane. Which is why it's also illegal to ride "CHiPs" style on your cycle w/ another rider. I still see Cycle Leos do that, though...

No and never.... I am scared to do it, because when I was a little boy, my dad would get off at motorcycles, that did that and he would pull out in front of them, or open his door. He even pull a tire iron on a guy once, that kick the truck.... I'm sure that guy will never kick another truck again.

20. Can I ride my motorcycle between cars in traffic?
The law doesn’t specifically say one way or the other, but there are several statutes that may come to bear depending upon the circumstances, i.e. right of way, obligation to drive in a single lane, signal intention, passing with safety, etc. Motorcycles are considered equally as cars regarding traffic laws, so the single lane, signal intention and other statutes in the Transportation Code could come in to play.

The main statute that makes “lane splitting” illegal is Transportation Code Section 545.060, entitled “Driving on Roadway Laned for Traffic.”

An operator on a roadway divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic:
shall drive as nearly practical entirely within a single lane; and
may not move from the lane unless that movement can be made safely.
http://tlo2.tlc.state.tx.us/statutes/tn.toc.htm

Reckless endangerment could also easily be charged.

it's funny how people in Houston (or Texas) for that matter freak out... but if you go to Cali where it is legal, it is just second nature to see a bike coming between the lanes (and no one makes guestures or obscenities to the bike rider)
This is a good subject. I recently moved back to Texas after living in Dubai for the last three years and lane splitting is very common place and really expected.
Actually in most European countries it is common as well. I went to a MotoGP in Spain and all the bikes were doing it and no one had a problem.
I am not sure why folks here in Texas freak out so much when bikes do it and I am a native Texan.
The only time here I would consider lane splitting is at a traffic light and I would be extremely cautious about doing it.

Lane splitting makes me nervous - I have seen a guy throw an arm out once on a lane splitting biker - and that was out in Cali.
yes sir... Blue SV. Full gear and hotter than a . And I would do it again. I get so sick of those inconsiderate gdamn cagers. I drive a big truck and even if the bike is doing stupid I still try to be as courteous as I can. Had one guy scream you as he pulled over the white line, sticking his arm out as if to stop me, scaring the other driver. I looked him in the face and said... No sir, you... And I eased my way btwn his bumper and her car. I also passed 2 SO's. I dont do it all of the time but when you see nothing but a sea of tail lights for miles and my bikes temp is reading 219... Yea...
