that sux. when its all over the media like this it just gives the general public one more "excuse" not to trust our police, even tho people like him constitute less than a percent of the entire force.

It's no surprise, some of the craziest (not in a good way) people I know are cops. Knew, actually, that's one reason I got out.

No different from when the average Joe whack-job does it. What percentage is that of the general population?

'news' media sucks .

It's a shame it happened.
The police are recruited from the human race, so occasionally you're going to wind up with a psycho.

I don't know which dept. you're referring to, but IMO most of them DON'T back up their officers enough when a clean shooting does go down.
I'm not referring to this incident, just others that I've seen.

Could you please elaborate on this, mr. Serpico(j/k).
It's not often you see a cop, or ex-cop, whose willing to have an opinion on such things, or if they do have an opinion, is of a nature such as your own;that being negative. And even then, most won't speak about it publicly.

And please don't be intimidated by the other cops on the board, since I know they like to maintain their blue wall of silence, and may send you harassing PMs j/k

And if you don't want to speak publicly about it, I'd be very interested to read what you have to say in PM.

What do you mean by "back up"? You're saying that you think most PDs don't side with their officers in legitimate shootings? Or that they don't provide them with adequate legal counsel? I find it hard to believe that cops would be so disloyal to their own, especially since every time a cop chokes on a donut(i'm being facetious, sorry) there's at least 20,000 of them at his funeral escorting the casket.
I also remember an episode of cops when an "officer down" call went over the radio, that was related to a suspect in a vehicle. I don't the officer was seriously harmed, but there was about 2 miles of police cruisers behind the car after the call went out.
But maybe these were just fellow cops, and it's upper management that's not 'backing up' their officers.

I used to think along the same lines before I became a cop (the part about admin backing their own). Turns out, I couldn't have been more wrong...

Admin freaks out when someone cries foul. Even if the complaint is the lamest, most absurd, idiotic thing you've ever heard, admin will not hesitate to "wash their hands" of the cop in any way they can. Do the legal, moral, and totally right thing, and if someone complains, prepare for a full investigation. I've even known IA to help Johnny thead write his complaint...

There are some bad cops, which I obviously think need to be fully pursued...

Disclaimer: My department is perfect in every way, its the best department EVER!

Very well put.....I think that if the officer is justified in his actions then the dept will stand by him. However if the officer is not justified they leave them out to hang (IAD will go out of their way to burn the officer). Everybody knows that there are good officers and then there are some that shouldnt be officers. Its the sameway in life there are a few good men/women and then there are some that DO NOT belong on this earth. Im not making any excuses for any officers for their action....i know that i can only control my own actions.

Please understand 1 thing... WE cops are Human Beings... We bleed just like the rest of the public, we cry like the rest of the public, we love like the rest of the public and we even laugh too(for those that thing we are always serious)... And since I have NEVER seen or Jesus in a Police Uniform (being that they are the only perfect being around) we must infer that cops are inperfect and make mistakes like the rest of humanity... This is calle the " See I told you " story... for those that have had a bad experience with a cop then this justifies their situation and shows the " See I told you it was not me... It was all the cops fault.." but we all know this is not true... as human beings we have seen our proud military personnel come under fire from several peoples imoral actions ... Have we not??? Does this mean that all military personnel are the same???? NO WAY... Most of them are hard working proud men and women that put their lives down for US... We have seen professional sports be drugged thru the mud with Murders( No offense OJ) rapes and many other infractions... Should we lump all of them in the same boat??? I dont believe so... I can go on and on... So just see it for what it is... A guy that bs's so well that no one knew he was Nuts...!!! Something just snapped in his head as it would have happened to ANY human being that is walking the face of this earth
