Former MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden has been hospitalised after being knocked off his bike while out riding near Misano earlier today.

The extent of the Red Bull Honda man’s injuries are yet to be determined but a team spokesman confirmed to BSN that the accident had occurred.

It is thought that Hayden was hit head-on by a car while riding with a group of friends. He was given medial attention at the scene before being transferred to hospital in Rimini.

Just like the Honda of Houston owners. Ride motorcycles as fast as humanly possible, just to be taken out on their bicycles.

Hope he pulls though.

How much you want to bet the driver is in the Marco Melandri official fan club?

Hit in the middle of the pack surrounded by other riders. What are the chances?

The hospital hasn't made any official statement regarding his condition and probably won't until the family is there. So, I take with grain of salt any news on his condition. However, it's likely critical giving he was transfer from the initial hospital, no small hospital, to the equivalent of a level 1 trauma center, no doubt the care a that center will be excelllent. Knowing how Red Bull takes care of its athletes they probably have charter a private jet to get his family SAP.

Update at 17:00 CET, Thursday: Nicky Hayden’s condition remains extremely serious.

The American, who remains hospitalised in the Intensive Care unit in the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, has suffered serious trauma with severe brain damage as a consequence.

The prognosis remains unknown.

MotoGP™ Legend and Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team rider Hayden was involved in a training accident whilst cycling in Italy. The American superstar was hit by a car whilst out cycling along the Rimini coast, where he has been spending some time following the recent Motul Italian Round of WorldSBK.

Emergency services were immediately called to the scene and Hayden was transported to local hospital. The 2006 Champion has since been moved to Cesena hospital.

More updates will come as soon as they are announced.

it. Just a reminder, no matter how much you prepare, can happen. Hope he pulls through. The Haydens are all nice folks.

BTW the coma is a drug induced one. Not a real coma. This is very common in major Level 1 trauma events. I hope they keep his head from swelling. This reminds me of Michael Schumacher's accident all over again.

I hesitated to bring up Schumacher, but that did occur to me. I would be genuinely upset if Nicky doesn't pull through this cleanly.

Michele Scarponi, the 2011 Giro d’Italia cycling champion, was killed last month after being hit by a van while training close to his home in Filottrano in eastern Italy.

There has been several motorcycle and car racers seriously injure on bicycles: Troy Bayliss, Mark Webber and also an instructor from Texas Tornado Boot Camp to name a few.

Many drivers, sadly specially here, are toward anything on two wheels but at least on the motorcycle to can say F you and good bye, not so on the bicycle. I bough a bicycle to train as it's a great cross-training but I stick to the trails at least I'll likely come ahead if I crash with anyone there.
