Anyone else finding yourself eating or craving extra salt during the summer?
I crave it. I'm guessing the sweating on the ride home is the cause. I will get the hersey squirts if I don't get enough salt.
I just have a hard time understanding why my body needs so much salt.
Can anyone explain to me why I get the squirts if i don't get a good dose of salt every night?

I'm at work and only have a Linux box (no root password either) so I can't view the video.
So, I may need more K+ (Potassium)???

more electrolytes are needed when you sweat them off. that include potassium, sodium, magnesium and bicarbonate. I do not restrict my salt intake this time of year, in fact i increase it usually. with blood pressure of 110/70 I can get away with it easily without a concern.

eat bananas and have a little more salt intake. your lack of salt will cause your muscles to cramps. you can buy salt pills.

I drink alot more water since Im constantly sweating. One gatorade between each 8 cups of water is what I plan for when Im outside in the heat.

Too much salt for you is bad!!! It will cause you to cramp MORE! Now if you catch yourself in a cramp then taking salt will make the cramp go away (weird I know) but it is only a temporary fix. Drink plenty of water and take a Multi Vitamin and you'll be fine. I'm sure your sodium craving will go away.

Hyper-Hydration is pretty damn hard to do in the weather we have... :thumb:

I find myself craving BBQ wings from KFC whenever my joints hurt because my body probably wants the gelatin. Your body craves what you need...food is self-medicating.
I remember my ex-gf used to love salty foods...her woman fruit tasted like elmer's glue. I wonder what salt does to a man's love juice?

Lack of salt can be one of the causes of cramps since salts are what allow you to contract and relax muscles in the first place due to ion channels in your muscles creating a charge differential.
When you replace salts, you should do so with sugar (such as gatorade). Salt is not readily absorbed in the intestines, however sugar is. And when sugar is absorbed, salts and h20 can follow--entering your system. And since lack of water is another cause of cramps, you are alleviating this problem as well.

Despite what people may think, you can't die from hyper-hydration--unless you have a kidney problem. Your stomach can't hold enough water to kill you, so you can't kill yourself in one sitting (you will throw up.). If you drink too much water over the course of the day, you will basically just end up passing out until your kidneys can process the water in your system. You will also most likely end up peeing on yourself... a lot. Eventually you will wake up with 10,000 less brain cells and a smell to explain to anyone you come near.

my main point in that statement was that everything needs to be taken in moderation. too much of anything can have negative effects.

There are documented cases of hyponatremia caused by excess water consumption while undergoing heavy exercise in high heat/humidity environments. The high heat/humidity environment is the key though, as someone suffering heat stress would be far more likely to suffer heat stresses that end up with excess sweat leading to low levels of sodium in the blood, followed continuing heat stress leading to reduced sweating followed by excess water.
Fortunately it is pretty uncommon that death occurs, though people are hospitalized in military boot camps, marathons, triathlons, fire departments and other places every summer.
