Not really more healthy (see OMEGA's comment). You can get all the protein you need from a very well balanced diet. But the protein is usually associated with other elements that you may not want contributing to your caloric intake (most often fat).
Protein shakes are a way to get additional (for those wishing to build muscle) or replacement (for those cutting overall calories but not wanting to cut protein) protein into your body.
There are many ways to use them and I am far from an expert on all the possibilities.
Right now I use a flavored whey protein drink (just the powder and skim milk) right after a workout. I want to create my own where I control what and how much sweetener is used (the reason I was looking for unflavored protein). Once I work out the recipe I will post it up here.
Casein protein can be taken before going to bed so your body can use it to build muscles while you rest. I plan to start drinking some before bed but I am not at this point.

I take ISOPURE ZERO CARB (strawberry & creme OR pineapple)... for almost 6 weeks regularly... It has worked for me very well. I have lost alot of weight and gained a good amount of muscle..No stomachache or any side effects. It doesn't make you feel full either, you can take a meal an hour or 2 after the shake.
But it's a lil pricey... vitamin shoppe has it for 34 bucks. GL with that.

Still not understanding why you want to try and sweeten it yourself?
Are you still looking to make shakes or drinks or cook with it? Dont see why you would mind if it was already sweetened or if you did it?

i just bought 16 lbs of protein from trueprotein.com i got in unflavored. it tastes like what i image shit and dirty socks to taste like. thank god i ordered a lot of diff flavor packets to go with it, but even then i need to add a quite a bit of flavor to enjoy the taste.
You can also look for stevia sweetened protein, which so far in my experience is either so overly sweet it is gross, or it tastes like what i imagine very bitter dirty socks taste like.
I would recommend just getting plain old sugar sweetened if you have an aversion to artificial sweeteners.
