What is the best material

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering what your opinion on the material for your jacket and pants. Some say leather is the best.

I want to get some good gear so im trying to get an idea of what i should be looking for.

No matter what anybody says about hot or comfort, leather is the safest.

I recently saw two men go down, one in leather and the other in textile. Both of them were very well protected by their jackets, but both jackets had to be replaced.

I have both a Teknic Violator perforated leather and a mesh Fieldsheer (for summer riding). Wear what you're most comfortable in, because you're the one who has to wear it. And if you don't like it, then you're more likely to NOT wear it. :thumb:

As far as protection, leather hads down. It will get a bit hot in the summer time but no question that it will hold up better in a crash. Better to be hot, than little cooler and bleeding or worse.

I would go with a perforated leather.

Leather will give you the best protection. If its preforated it will atleast breath a little while riding. My perforated leathers get pretty good air flow in them. Sitting still sucks, but once you get moving, its all good

well to be honest im trying to get the basics done. If i have to spend that much on stuff i wont be riding for a long time :(

You dont have to have all the best gear at first. I know I didn't and still dont. I dont ride street at the moment so it doesn't really matter on my jacket.

Any gear is better than no gear in my opinion. Just dont go buy a designer leather jacket and hope that will hold up. Get a jacket designed for street riding with built in protection.

I would recommend to start at least jacket, gloves, helmet. Those were my firsts pieces of gear. I bought my boots shortly after that, and then my knee pads.

You just mainly want to make sure you are protected for when you fall. If you can't afford the best protection, get the something you can afford that still offers protection. Trust me.... you dont want to fall and then wish you had it.

but i agree to a point, i'd rather you save and have ALL the gear vs blowing your wad on a jacket and have crappy gloves or lid.

also all those jackets w/ sponsors all over them, they get paid, so how much goes into the actual jacket?

and get a jacket w/ reflective piping.

Always consider fit as well!!! A loose jacket will not protect you and a jacket too tight will restrict your movement and cut off circulation.

when you try on a jacket (and do try them on before you buy.) crouch down into a riding position. move around in that position and perform motions like you would while riding. you dont have to go "RUUUUUURRRRR RRRUUUUUUUURRRRR", but it helps.

if you have found a great deal on a jacket online, first go to cycle gear to try on that jacket. make sure you get something that fits you. a large a* might not fit you the same as a large joe rocket, for example

I love my Jos Rocket textile mesh jacket. Cool as hell when riding and almost cold on cool days (have to wear the rain jacket on the inside of it). Got great Icon Hooligan gloves that vent well even in 100 degree heat. Hardly sweat with them. I love my RF-1000 helemt. Kinda hot but, over good spill and da brains be all over the pavement. Knee pads w/shin guards are next with a nice perf leather jacket to follow in Oct. I've done wrecked in short and sleeveless shirt. Took three months for scabs to heal from onyl doing about 30 on the ole dirt bike. Since then I HATE the taste or smell of Glodshloger, the drink that cured the apin of the good ole scrubbin of da wouns, OUCH!

Please, please, please, please try on our gear b4 u buy. Make sure it fits rite and always wear it!

I have a size 44 (large)black leather perf Joe rocket blaster Ill sell ya looks, and still smells new, had it for 9 mo and its only chewed up a few bugs. Its just a little big on me (now).

Otherwise, I have the above listed Leather perf. jacket, it is fairly cool actually even on the hottest sunshiney days, as long as your moving.

I also have a Scorpion hat trick textile, and I have to say they perform on par with eachother. It does feel like the textile has been a bit warmer while stationary. I only bought it because i got a little thinner and the Joe Rocket now flaps around a bit in the wind.

I forgot to ask about the material. I assumed if something was made to protect it would be tested, so as long as you got something good it was good for protection. Only after reading some posts about leather did i get confused :hs:

I went with an A* leather street jacket. I had to use much search-fu to find a great deal online IN my friggin' size (small), but it was worth it. You can also find good deals on closeouts if you surf around. :)
