In reality do blue jeans really have any more protection then shorts, or is it more of a mental safety thing.

Not a good question...too many variables.
Speed, surface as examples... but would you rather a hot piece of metal fall onto your bare leg and roll off, or denim then roll off?
Denim/cloth is going to be better than nothing... to what degree is another matter.

well, if jeans did not offer any more protection than shorts, why not ride with a thong?
IS like choosing the 'least bad thing' to wear.
still, jeans would at least offer just a little protection in case of a very minor get off, when shorts offer pretty much nothing.

If you went down at say 60mph on concrete jeans would shred into nothing so do they really offer that much protectinon?
My buddy went down at about 20mph when a woman pulled out in front of him and his jeans ripped apart.

I had a twenty something MPH crash on a bicycle and it looked like someone took a beltsander to parts of me...can't be any better on a motorcycle.

Yes they offer more protection.
Is it sufficient? NO

Wear Pants... the tougher the better.
I've torn denim at low speeds, then I've had an accident around 30mph
and the only damage were some holes, from where my body made mild contact with the darn light assembly on the truck and not damage from the street.
...you go down at 60mph you've got bigger issues to worry about than how long your pants and underwear lasted. Just know it would/will be worse if you do it in shorts.

Only if you wear toughskins.
Otherwise you are equally fk'd IMO.
Having said that, I wear jeans on the street. Little more protection from gravel, bugs and other debris.

Shorts only provide protection if your on a gsxr and only if you strap your lid to your seat.

my cousin did an experiment for a science project... he dropped a 30 pound sandbag onto (a) a tshirt, (b) denim, (c) leather... all while driving at 30 mph. the times that it took to see a sand trail are as follows:
tshirt 2 seconds
denim, 5 seconds
leather, 1 minute and still no sand, sped up to 60 mph, another minute and no sand...

I highsided with jeans on at about 40mph while on the service road to 45 and I was perfectly fine. I still wear those jeans to this day. My case is an exception though. Good denim is better than nothing, but far from the best.

Nope I always wear blue jeans, but the thought just came to that at anything but a low speed crash they don't offer a whole lot of protection.

this all really depends on how your body makes contact, and for how long the contact is made in one spot.

I had a get off at about 45mph, I paced off 70 feet that I slid on concrete (don't try to ride fast on grooved pavement).
The jeans I was wearing twisted around on my left leg and when I stood up there were a couple of long holes worn in the pant leg. Apparently the way the cloth bunched up, it protected my skin, while the denim wore away.
If I had been wearing shorts I know for certain the I would have been going to the hospital with serious abrasions.
I realize I was very fortunate not to have gotten more than a dime sized scrape on my knee.
Jeans offer a little protection. I look at it this way; poor protection is better than no protection.

when I wrecked I was goin bout 90. my jeans tore apart on my knees and got some good scuffs on other parts. but I could have been alot worse. now I where knee guards. you can also buy some armored undies from Icon. but jeans protect my than shorts and some jeans protect better than others. I was wearing 20x jeans they pretty tough. you can also buy ridin jeans or just get leathers

I went down a concrete spill way on a little tykes sled once in my boxers, helmet, chest protector and mx boots.
While hilarious the concrete was not kind to the bare skin on my legs that contacted the concrete.

he must have gotten them at target. A good pair of denim jeans should withstand the frictional stress that typically characterize a low side of the described nature.
I low sided at about 25 mph once and my jeans didn't even get a tear, my right leg was bruised nonetheless.

you guys are gonna love this. in the summer I wear overalls. yes, overalls just like a farmer. it allows me to wear a pair of shorts underneath (get the overalls 2 sizes too large) and when I get where I'm going I can slip out of them and then be comfortable in shorts.
yeah go ahead and snicker or whatever. I don't care.
of course I had to add my own sense of "style"

When I was young and dumb in my late twenties, I decide to go jack around on the dirt bike in my neighborhood in Sharpstown here I grew up (da ghe-tto!). Of course I was bullet proof (post 6 yrs Army Ranger). I decided to play around only wear my running gear, sleevless shirt, shorts and tennis shoes. Everything went well for the first 30 minutes or so. Then, I turned around on the block to park the bike in the garage. To my dismay and sweaty hands, my right hand slipped off the throttle. Needless to say the super tuned Honda 250 decided to show me the power band it had in 2nd gear and one super wheelie did I pull. Damn did that wheelie look sick. I was straight up and down. I could hit the front brake or anything and when I regripped the throttle in a demising effort to hold the F on to the bike, instantly more power was added. As the shows and movies say " don't try these stunts at home they're preofrmed by trained professionals" over I go.... Damn did that ever hurt. The bike actually launched off the ground and down I went. A full bottle of Goldshloger (however you spell it) and 1 hour of scrubbing the wounds later, I got in the house. To this day, 10+ years later, I still have scars from the road rash. Hell NO, jeans provide more protection than shorts. Suffer with a lil heat. Had I had at least jeans on, I would not have had the horrible road rash and over 1 month recovery from my injuries! Needless to say, I was the roadrash king at work for months. My mom still gives me shite every so often about that wreck.
I'm looking for full leathers right now. I know, eventually, with my luck I will go down hard. I want to be somewhat protected when I go down. I rather now have skin graffs or an amputation due to infection.
Thats my hard learned oponion!

interesting test.
think of it this way...sure your jeans might get eaten up in five seconds, but thats 5 seconds that the road wasn't tearing the shit out of your legs. and hey you might even have slid to a stop by then.
with shorts the first and only thing to contact the pavement will be your skin.
denim is cheaper than skin too. :thumb:

Crashing in either is bad...but the more material the better. Wear pants!
