Quick question about getting permit

If I just want to get my motorcycle permit to ride with a licensed motorcycle rider 18/21>, do I have to have taken the motorcycle course? My mom had gotten it, and she hadn't taken a motorcycle course, and she just took a written test. Is it still the same?

I am planning on taking the course, I just can't get to it until next week or so, but I'm just wanting to ride the back roads with my dad.

If it makes a difference, i'm under 18.

Hahaha. No. I had to sell that after I ate dirt pretty bad at the track. Broken tailbone and hip. :/
