its just like Lobo mentioned...
1. Get insurance
2. Get the bike inspected (they will want proof of insurance during the inspection)
3. Go get it registered and plates / change title over to your name. (also pay sales tax at this time in addition to title fee and registration fee)
Cheers, and good luck.

get insurance, take proof of insurance and bill of sale, or signed title, up to courthouse and get the title put in your name. then go get it inspected. then get a helmet and some gear. then get your motorcycle license, either taking msf or a driving test at the DPS office. if you want to take the MSF course, pm RACERX and he will give you all the info you need.

Depends on where you go, but in my 17 years of riding and owning bikes they need inspection certificate before they will reg and x-fer title..

i had to get inspection before registration, because it was out of state...i would say do inspection first, since you have to do it anyways.
1. get insurance
2. he did sign form 130-U, right? (if not get it "signed" and fill it out)
3. if it is an out of state title, get an inspection with a green form. if a TX title
don't worry about an inspection as long as it is current.
4. Pay your taxes and you're done.
A bill of sale isn't necessary as there is a provision for sales price in box 21 on the Application for Texas certificate of Title (form 130-u)

JJ and Lobo are correct. You need and inspection if;
A) it's a Texas inspection but it's expired
or
B) It's an out of state title.
Either way you'll need proof of insurance first.

just go to the courthosue, do you have all your paperwork? 130U etc?
Bring your stuff with you when you come by the shop and I'll have SuzAnne look at it for you.

i went to change my title and they wanted a bill of sale, but since i traded for my bike i didnt have one. so after waiting in line for over an hour, they gave me a form to fill out and i had to get the signature of the guy i traded with before i could change the title

Yeah, make sure you have form 130U and it is signed by the guy who sold it to you, and make sure he also signs both the front and the back of the title.
