View Full Version : License: Driven... how likely am I to pass without the MSF?

Good morning everyone!!! :hello:
Ok, I'm one of the slow learner's, I guess, but I read the booklet the morning I took the "written" portion of the license :wompwomp: I barely passed...altho I still at that point hadn't ridden on the street yet, just a few parking lots in the days following the purchase of the bike...that was in September. FFWD to now... I'm wondering if I'm good to go on the "driven" part of the test. I'd really like to get my "M" class with no restrictions soon.
*BTW* I have hopes of taking the MSF course, but I too have hit scheduling barriers. I work nights & weekends so anyone who knows of a Sun-Tues course please let me know.
Thanks!!:love4:

If you fail it, it means you should give up all hopes of riding cause you suck. Its so easy my 7 y.o. could pass it.

The actual driving part is easy. If you can stop, turn right, turn left, start, um........... that's it.
They hand out class M's like swine flu.

Passing the test is easy. Getting there and going through the process in a PITA. You have to go with a friend in a car that has up to date insurance, inspection, and plates because the license tester will ride in that car. You have to bring your helmet and insurance, and ensure your plates and inspection is up to date. Most importantly, you have to get to the place really early. The line for driving / riding tests begins to form at like 6:00 am, and they can only handle so many per day.
The test is quite easy. The only hard part is being able to either see the blinkers on the car so you make the correct turns, or hear the horn when then signal to turn. Look both ways, signal in advance, both feet down at stop signs, and don't speed.

if you take the MSF you get a certificate that you can take to the DMV and not have to take the driving test :)

I have also heard that if you drive the motorcycle up there yourself now, some officers will give you a no license ticket, like you have to get someone with an M to bring it up there or trailer it.....anyone else hear that?

^^'tis true!
Just take the class. Why try and fail?
Also, if you had taken the class the written portion would have been a snap.
After the class, you'll be a better rider AND you'll get your 'M' :thumb:

It's super easy I never left a neighborhood for mine. Are you really starting on a 600 man that's a lot of bike be careful. I started on a cruiser and rode dirty for a long time before getting my m. They didn't hassle me about riding the bike up there but I got to the dps before any workers did plus my driver was in a truck so I don't think they thought twice about it.

LOL!! I almost bought a 750! I didn't even know there were smaller options...I got the 600 because I liked the color scheme better; White & Silver v.s. Burnt Orange & Black! I learned how to ride on this bike and still can't operate a standard car... :keke:
I really look forward to taking the class, I was hoping it would be before my first track day. Doesn't look like that'll be the case. I believe myself to be a safe & smart rider. I know the class will be extremely beneficial.

so you plan on doing a trackday BEFORE you take MSF?
how many miles have you ridden so far?
who "taught" you how to ride? how long have they been riding?

As of right now: not quite 3k.
Several different people with various degrees of experience, including my father who's been riding all his life. I'm now under the close supervision of 99 Chris ;) (and I don't ride alone)
I'm still learning...and will be for the rest of my riding days.

I thought the track day organizations required either a Motorcycle License or the MSF course? Or was I hallucinating when I read that?
BossLady
05-14-2009, 06:02 PM
The lady told me that if you kill the bike, you auto fail. Both feet on the ground for 3 seconds at stop signs and look both ways (over do it). The place on House St. in Alvin was the least crowded that I could find. You still have to get here at like 7. They asigned me a time later in the afternoon so I left and came back. It's first come, first serve so if the time slots are filled up you go home... The bike has to be totally street legal. Bike and vehicle have to have current tags and insurance. It's a cake walk :D

It's in the rules, never heard of it being enforced.

I would ask to make sure though, that would suck if they make you take the harder to get into course. I would think most JP's won't know the difference anyways. But RacerX would probably know better than them or me

I would def take the MSF. It taught me several things that saved my arse while riding the street. Plus you get a cool certificate that negates the driving portion, counts for insurance discounts, and allows you to ride without a helmet (if you choose to, not that I recommend it).
