Battery Dead

I haven't used the bike for a while now and yesterday when I tried to started it wouldn't. It seems that the battery has no charge. What is the proper way to give it a jump? Would I do it just like a car with regular cables? :icon_scra

or try

turning the ignition on, kill switch on, clutch in, 2nd gear. have a buddy push you. when at a decent speed. stand up......... all at the same time drop down in the seat (to give the rear tire some bite) and release the clutch. "bump starting" the bike.

If you're jumping of with a car make sure it is NOT running when you do it. The amperage put out by the car's alternater can fry your regulator / rectifier.
If you don't get to ride your bike frequently, I'd recommend getting a Battery Tender, that will autyomatically charge it without over-charging.

Patrick, so when I connect the cables from my truck's battery to the bike it (truck) should be off? How long will it need to be connected for?

Yes, don't have the truck running at all.
You should be able to start the bike immediately if there are no other problems.

If you have a battery thats dead but you don't need it charged immediatly, will a tender bring it back up after a period of time or is it just for maintaining an already charged battery?

I've brought back batteries after keeping them on a trickle charge for about a week.

Good luck bump starting a fuel injected bike or a vtwin...OMG I was trying to bump start an Aprilla in Austin one time going down hill and the damn tire kept locking up.

The problem with bumping a FI bike is that the battery can be so dead and will not give the bike fuel to start. You will end up wasting your time. I know from experience. I left my heated grips on one too many times...lol

Just need to bump it in 3rd, trust me I've bumped enough SV1000 and Aprilia Mille racebikes.
