Okay so most of you I have met at ASI or the memorial ride guys know that I have been working my cbr for the last month just getting the fel for it. I bought it to stunt and play with. I have been trying my wheelies in first gear and can get the front up....I pop them I can't ride them out yet. But what I did notice in the last couple threads was people coming and saying to do start off with second gear wheelies??? Why? I just want to learn and so I again ask the guys that have been doing it a while...but please support your claim don't just say no 1st gear is better...no 2nd is better....shampoo is betta....no conditioner is betta...stop looking at me swan!

oh yeah thanks in advance!

dunno about your bike but on mine 1st gear is just too squirrely to learn on.... once you know what full throttle control is then they are fine but just too touchy to learn on. just a hair in first is the difference between looping it and not..... just my 2cents

Learn to power wheelie in 1st. Then, learn to clutch it up in second. That is with stock gearing. If you have changed your sprockets it is going to be different. Or, get a liter bike and bounce it up in 3rd. Don't wreck.

Yeah, wear your gear and becarful. It is all about getting a feel for your throttle. The smaller Hondas can be tough to get up with stock gearing but the pull is consitent and smooth.

Probably best to go hang out with Vu and Joe. Those guys have this stuff on lock. :icon_thum

Joe is the one I hang with though Vu has been out with us before. Joe got me started on clutching it up in 1st...??? my 97 cbr has to get to like 11k before popping the clutch for it to come up. I can pow it up about a foot or so but Joe told me to switch to clutching. I know it can be done....joe stole my bike and did it in front of me. Guess I'll just be out at ASI practicing and practicing...for real though...don't laugh at my 6 inch wheelies or i may :crying:

Moody knows what he is talking about.

I started with first gear powers... Don't expect them to ride far... Those are just to get the feel for your throttle in a wheelie, and getting the feel for your front wheel flying up in front of you. The first time I brought up a good 2nd gear clutch up to about balance point, I shit my pants so bad it almost made me loop it from the weight transfer. But seriously, don't expect your power wheelies to be super high or super long at all. Once you think you've got it down, move on to clutch ups. You do know where your powerband is huh? Cause that helps alot.

no one can tell you how to do it ....you will get the feel of it after a while

ok first gear is what i use for all my wheelie variations unless im doin sitdowns then i use first or second, i was workin on second up in austin but it kind of got to me and i looped out, crashin in first is no where near as bad as loopin in second, but you can ride much farther in second, second is smoother, but there is alot more power when you do them in second and it is very easy to loop them if you just rely on engine brake alone or just alittle back brake, but i would say learn all your stuff in first then wait till second, i mean like i always run out of revs in first on any bike i ride, and second i can ride as long as i want as long as i want, but i have to be sure and cover the rear brake, but im not sayin you cant loop it in first cause i have looped many SS circle attempts in first and i've looped a few special ks in first.... but the only reason i keep those tricks in first is because i have no handbrake..... but im just a pussy joe is a beast when it comes to throttle control.... good guy to help you learn to stunt, just my 2 cents....

I say 2nd becouse they are safer...i play with 1rst sometimes but it is very twitchie and the bike has a tendensy to want to fall over when your learning to slow everything way way down...my 2cents is learn stuff in second becouse you dont have to worrie so much about looping out and you have a much bigger window to play with learn some throttle controle and start bringing them up higher and higher then go to 1rst gear and learn finecess and REAL throttle control...But im not to big into parking lot stuff im more of a freeway kinda guy....

If you want to keep your bike pretty for longer then do stuff in 2nd other wise you will loop out or fall over or something bad. Just my 2cents man...

when i 1st started usin the clutch i clutched 2nd gear....i wouldnt suggest clutchin 1st gear unless u got ur back brake covered cuz its real easy to loop 1st then 2nd but yea im not a parkin lot stunta either

I'd do what Joe said. He's really good. The goal is to bring the bike up from almost a stand still. It's all about balance point. a second gear wheelie will come up smother, but some people are going pretty fast when they do that. Thats what I hear from others.

dont mean to steal this thread but i got a 05 gsxr600, and when i clutch it up in 2nd it doesnt wanna come up so easily...do i gotta just flat out floor it while clutching it and pull up on the handlebars?

Its all in the way your doing it man.....your bike will come up no problems i thought the same thing when i started but you just have to learn...i thought the same thing about tanks too but i kinnda figured them out today so ya its all about finess....

to the origanle guy go with whatever gear you want to but 2nd will keep your bike looking pretty.....
