How much are you against just laying it down in the back of a truck? We use SexualChocolates truck, but after 3 bikes, the bed is full. I can come pick you up in my truck, but I don't have a bikerack at all.

Yep you only live once so might as well. Check mtbr.com for reviews. It's pretty simple really all you need is a good entry level hardtail (approx. 400-800). Stay away from store brands (sports authority, walmart, etc) and you're good. Right now is a good time to buy as the 08s are on closeout (some 07s and 06s left out there).

I think your money will be better spent checking CL for a good used bike. For the trails out here I'd rather have a hardtail, but then again I don't know of any crazy ass drops either. There were several good bikes on CL for under $300 yesterday too.
