ok, these stolen bike threads are out of control. will u guys/gals please do yourselves favors when storing ur bikes:
1. quit leaving your bike parked in apt complexes :banghead: - don't chain it up, don't wedge it in between cars, don't leave it under the stairways. just don't leave it there! find a real storage, friend's garage, self storage units, where ever, enclosed and locked up
2. don't take ur bike anywhere that it'll be unattended - movies, mall, shopping, keep it parked up front of parking lots and keep it in sight. it only takes 5 minutes, a pick up truck, and 2 idiots to pick up a bike
3. for the love of god, GET LOJACK installed - quit worrying about upgrades like body light kits, slip on, cool stickers, tinted visor, invest first in theft se f@#$in curity!
i absolutely hate reading threads of friends or friends of friends gettin got. use a little more common sense and lock these things up people. times r gettin tough. stealing is only gonna get worse out here. and i'll always help and keep my eyes open for a stolen bike :thumb:

I live in an apt complex...but apparently the 2 R1s that are relatively close to me are enough of a deterent :keke:
Oh and I have full coverage so if they take this one it's just time for a new one :thumb:

I hear ya man, of the bikes I see in my complex I think I'm the only one that puts a secondary lock on the bike....but it definitely is not going to stop someone from picking up the bike and taking it :-/

i was in an apartment for 2-3 weeks before i moved to my house and after i bought my bike.
i would practically hit the ground running every day when my alarm went off to go see if my bike was still in the parking lot.

Seriously??
I understand where you're going with this and you're right about making security a priority, but why don't we include work or school for that matter? +1 on the low jack, but maybe the right kind of insurance would be cheaper. I know mine is. How much is the lo-jack service?
I mean after all, if we can't ride our bikes where we like to go... it kind of defeats the purpose, yes? At least to me.

it's ur bike, park where u wanna. install an alarm or lojack though. it's a GOOD investment. lojack runs from 5 bills to 8, depending on the model u choose. they now have a model that if ur bike moves more than 3 feet they send u a text, email, and call ur cell

Thats bad ass - I was thinking about getting a pager that would alert me so I could try and make a move on someone lifting it. (Probably not realistic as fast as some of these guys are.)
Is there a service contract (like a monitoring fee), or do you just pay when you need to use it?

WHOOHOO! Finally a happy ending to a stolen bike thread!
From the R1 Forum:
Well guys..i have always said what i would do if i saw this happening...now i know...
The girl im seeing doesnt live in the worst area of town by any means, but that area isnt to far away...was leaving her place at an unexpected 3 am last night....to find....
1 guy in a truck, and another guy trying to get my new 2009 R1 up a ramp....the steering wheel was not locked.
i had just got there as he was mounting the bike...
gentlemen...not to brag...but im 5 10, and 188lbs and a pro MMA fighter...sooo.. i am not an ultra aggresive person out the ring, and honestly i was worried he would drop the bike...so i tried to be cool...
I simply said out loud but politely... " guys, just get outta here and i wont call the cops.."
LUCKILY the kick stand was still down bc he jumped off, but his buddy in the truck started to pull off...so i bolted after them...the guy tried to jump on the back of the truck and lost his footing and fell to the ground..but his buddy didnt STOP!!
The guy was prob 5 9 and your average 165 ish....eminen wanna be...so he starts talking all ghetto...and gets up ready to fight...
So i just go to work...he steps in to wrestle me and grabs my shirt...as most guys do hes facing down...bad idea...1 right uppercut and i break open is mouth..then a very simple calssic left hook follow through....cheek bone goes snap.
i call the cops...and they get there shortly...the guy wanted to press assauly charges, but the cops kinda just patted him on the head and said, " ok we'll get his info.." then took him away.
I chatted with them for a while and made some friends..then left...my bike unharmed!! yay!!!
2009 R1 , 502 miles! I just ordered the Titanium full system low mount ex, power commander with map, and pair valve plates...
Next round will be some underlighting, brake lines, some carbon parts, and fender elim. then wheels...

i park at an apartment with no lock... for 2 years no problem. It's a nicer area, at the back so not much traffic, used to worry me... but now some squid just bought a shiny brand new Gixxer, and i'm parked 4 spots over with a beatup, fairings falling off, dirty and grimy, 2007 brown fugly commuting ex500 with over 30,000 on it since 07.... SO i'm not too worried as I carry full insurance on it for $44 a month. It'd almost be cheaper just to have it lifted than pay it off anyway lol.
That's one advantage of tards, and the ratty older looking bikes, they aren't prime candidates for the greedy eye. :thumb:
And yes, i'll be getting a house w/garage before I get a shiny new bike. i've only got this one till june (its my friends who also left it outside and its ignored)
SO solution = buy an ugly ex500 and save on lojack. :-) I can still hightail it through traffic with the best of you (ghost rider learned from me:D )

Long story short, I located the guy thru eyes open thread like this one and phone calls..
And he got a face of my 9mm and a pair of shiney new bracelets, now he currently resides at gray bar hotel..
Thieves suck if they want your bike bad enough they will get it!

Straight up PREVENTION, PREVENTION, PREVENTION!!!!
For those of u who haven't seen it yet or haven't been told..... SF ins has increased their rates on motos, and ALL of that has to do with the increase in claims we've experienced in the area within the past 2-3 yrs. I've had about 5 totals out of my office alone in the past year.
I expect them to keep going up, considering not only the thefts but the collisions.
I've had 2 bikes over the past 7 yrs and have NEVER FILED 1 claim, prevention is the key!

I honestly wouldn't mind if my bike got stolen. Less stress off my back. It's called insurance. Why buy a bike (which is a luxury item) and no have it covered? I had full coverage on my project bike that I didn't ride for a whole year. Its worth it.
I pay for the right to be able to park my shit in comfort where I want to.

Yep. I'm not giving my bike away, but not gonna spend a fortune and waste time because some low life MIGHT decide to steal my bike... which is insured anyways.
I ride it everyday... it simply isn't worth the extra cost/time for a storage unit. For what a garage costs at an apartment, I could buy another bike.
I do however have it right out the window.
Lojack might be worth it... only to catch the theives... I don't want the bike back. It'll be damaged, and insurance will replace it anyways. I'd just want the theives charged... and hopefully off the streets.
BTW... I know this doesn't apply to all bikes. You don't ever see Ducs and Aprillias left out.

Wouldn't someone or a team of people who steal bikes, acknowledge the fact that some bikes have lo jack and disable it or disconnect the battery. im not fully sure how lo jack works, but if someone wants to steal your car with a nice viper alarm system. they can get around that system if they want your car.

True, but those that just chunk a bike into a pickup and take off will be caught off-gaurd.
And usually it's hidden a bit. As well as not really expected since most of us don't have it.

Well I guess to find out, we would need to figure out how LoJack is installed. I guess its up to the installer on how secret the install is. But from what I just read, it gets power from the battery.
So unless lo jack had a back up battery, your out of luck.

From the Lojack manual, FAQ section:
"Where does LoJack Early Warning® get its power from?
The unit obtains its power from the motorcycle’s battery. The LoJack
Early Warning® also has a back-up battery."
The early warning is what notifies you if the bike is moved without the keyfile present. I dont know if that paragraph means that "you'll still be notified the bike is moved, but we won't be able to find it" or that the whole system will keep being functional through the backup battery...
This got me puzzled, thought my lojack was running on its own battery, charging from my bikes battery. Might call them one of these days and make sure...

Oh yeah, I'm sure there's some "Gone in 60 seconds" "professional" thieves out there.
But there's also cases of a few guys with a pick up truck, probably f*cked up on drugs and an IQ of (-50) combined between them, thats where lojack, alarms, chains etc come to play.
On the other hand, lojack costs about as much as a years worth of insurance (maybe more depending on each ones rates) and discount isn't that great if u have it installed. I am not sure any more if its worth it unless you plan on having only liability or you feel your bike is not replaceable...

most bike thieves arent "professionals". just random low lives that dont know their ass from their elbow. and if they did disconnect the batter, the lo jack system will run under its own power for a while.

Sounds like Lo Jack wasn't able to help him, as he stated:
Had lojack but it's useless for motorcycles... by the time it's activated from the police report chances are it's already been found.

On a car, lo jack could be in a thousand places, motorcycle you have very few spots.

Well, besides the fact that you need to pay a monthly or annual subscription for all GPS products out there, I think they are more useless than lojack IMO because
1) it is equally easy to find the device on the bike, if not easier.
2) They do not cooperate with the police in any way, you have to call it in or try to recover it yourself which would be pretty stupid and dangerous
and
3) GPS does not work everywhere. If your bike goes into a garage/basement or some other place that it can't triangulate the position, you're screwed. There's a better chance with lojack cause it uses RFID, practically transmitting through everywhere, but it doesn't work with exact position; its more like a device that tells you how close you are to the transmitter.
On a car, lo jack could be in a thousand places, motorcycle you have very few spots.
That is true. But I think thats why they give you the Early Warning feature that cars dont have. The faster you go check on your bike, the faster u can report it and then it all comes down to how fast the police is willing to start looking. One should have a few hours from the time the bike gets stolen to the time it is taken to another location and they take it apart to find the lojack.
I dont know exactly how it works with the police though. Does any officer who happens to be in the area get a notification there's a stolen bike nearby, or does a specific unit have to go out and look? If its the second, yeah, chances are slim....

If the degree (angle) of my bike changes while it's armed/parked, my phone (iPhone 4) starts ringing with the alert instantly............and out comes the 40.
And if the thieves are able to get the bike away......The GPS will lead directly to them (in Real Time)......To get to the 2 sensors, one must completely remove the tail section , and the entire nose ........its a little pricey , but worth every penny!
