I mean they are like 20 bux. I have seen 2 people now, in the last 3 months or so, that have wrecked without knee pads. One of the broke thier arm and chipped thier knee cap. guess what? The arm is fine now and they are still limping.
90% of teh time I have them on. Im tellin ya man, broken bones will heal up, but tear up your knee and that's gonna take some time. It may never be right again.
20 bux yall.
That is all.

Wore mine on my ride today :thumb: Didn't scuff em but I sure did break that new rear tire in all the way ;)
A lot of nights I'm guilty of riding without them, but on the spirited paced backroads rides, I either have them under my jeans or wearing my full suit  No questions asked.

sometimes a little education rules the nation......i had never thought about knee pads....and no one had really ever mentioned them. all i ever saw was make sure you wear a helmet, gloves and jacket so i thought i was covered ...now that ive been down, with no knee pads i understand the importance. sometimes it takes that too for people to get it. and yes damn near 4 mos later my knees still give me $hit :crying: ....wish i woulda had em on...all i can say is wear em people....:thumb: good post brandt.

Speaking of knee pads, I'm kinda lookin into a brand that fits more securely.
I have the kind that have two velcro straps but I feel like they will shift somewhat easily in a crash/fall. Maybe I should just get some riding pants and call it a day though  Your thoughts?
Dustin, don't be a jackass, this isn't the section to BS in.

I have knee pads. I don't wear them because they don't fit under some of my jeans. (Might be a girl thing?) My leather pants have knee pads built in and I like that, but when the weather is hot I don't wear leathers either. We all know the risk of throwing our leg over that bike, gear or no.

:thumb: I thought the same. Now, I wear riding pants and knee pads almost anywhere I go. I do have to admit I sometimes wear jeans and no knee pads, if its somewhere short or what not, but I feel naked the entire time.
I guess the second thing is that since you are just going to the store, or to lunch, and not going to ride aggressively, you don't think you are going to take a spill, so you lag on protection.

I bought mine from Javi. They are a little more expensive but they seem to be very stiff/ hard and they fit nicely, very comfortable. They have four velcro straps, the shin is very protected. I believe Icon makes them. If we touch one person with this and they get some, then you have made progress. Great post Brandt.

I ride with the Icon ones. Had them for a year then bought riding pants with integral knee pads. The slopped all over and I took them out and went back to the Icons. They stay secure and gentle floor tests between the Icons and the riding pants: Icons no problem from standing to impact, integral ouch from 1 foot bent leg to impact. I recommend the shin gard but even the knee only will help (roller hockey experience).
Peace and ATGATT.

I'm in the same boat with the people saying it doesn't fit underneath my jeans.
That's why I went the route of the A* Bionic Knee Pads - they go over the pants; CG has them, I bet MU can get them fir a better price.
They're bulky and somewhere between knee pads and offroad knee braces, but they have 3 main advatages over knee pads, IMO:
1. Considerably better protection. Not only do they protect the cap, they also keep the (lower part of te) leg from moving sideways this reducing fracture risk.
2. Unlike k-p, they also have a strap to secure *above* knees. There's no such thing on most k-ps.
3. I can put them over any pants, any size, this increasing the likelihood of wearing. The best of gear is worthless if you don't wear it.
Y'all should consider it. As an added bonus to me the more people buy it the less I look like Robocop's idiot cousin

I been riding with mine on into work the past two days. Actually, they probably kept me a bit warmer this morning cause it was a bit chilly. They don't bother me at all. I'm gonna start wearing them EVERY time I go out on the bike. I got the AVS(?) EVS (?) brand. I forgot.

If you have to put these knee pads on, why not wear your leathers? Go one more step for safety. You got helmet, gloves, jacket, boots, knee pads, why not make it leather to complete the package? I don't wear it because I ain't got one besides, they don't fit under my jeans. Kudos to anyone that wear gears.:thumb:

I prefer to wear leather pants under my over-size FUBU Jeans. I even zip the jacket and pants together.
On the street, I also wear a back protector.
Now, I also wear the alpinestars shin/knee guards.
At the track, I wear knee pads under my leathers for extra cushioning.
I dress like I'm suiting up for football (but at 100+ mph)

Bought some A*'s after my first forest ride and I def feel much better protected. But like some of you others have said, I don't wear them on quick runs or daily commute.
Still have gear left over from my cycling days and on long trips I sometimes wear those shorts with the padded crotch/ass under my jeans. With the shorts, kneepads and cruiser boots, I had to buy some boot fit jeans one size larger and longer.
Now it all fits perfect.

I wear Bohn Armour Pants at all times when I'm on the bike. In addition to knee pads they have hip, thigh, and tailbone pads as well. I figure they will at least reduce the severity of an injury in case of a crash.
There's a saying the Chinese use concerning motorcycles.
In a car there's steel covering flesh. On a bike there's flesh covering steel.
I will cover my flesh that covers the steel.
On a side note I've seen a couple of wrecks on the street where knee pads saved the person from more injury. I think that your knees are way worth more than $20. Most of us spend that on lunch or something. Worth every penny invested.

:-/ but DO have a question though :
Squoddy made me get these shin guard things with knee pads built on.
They kinda flap around at the top, above the knee. So, If i slide feet 1st - I don't see a problem with them, but if i slide face 1st - they are going to fold down and leave the knee ball exposed.
is that normal? should i get different ones ? or invest in duct tape?
I don't know - so I gotta ask

Most people wear them under jeans/pants for that reason. Dainese makes some nice ones that have three straps, two on the bottom and one above the knee. The only downside is they cost $70.00, which really doesn't seem like that much to me.

I put about 300 miles on them yesterday. Simonton Blvd, 1458, 359, 3090, and 149. The pads were a little akward at first. After a while though I got used to having them on. Didn't even think about them being there until I would stop. I admit they aren't the most comfortable thing to walk around in. They are preformed to be bent a little at the knee so standing straight legged puts pressure above your knee a little bit.

They are more for off road use but I liked how they fit and they have aluminium bars that flex to give your knees support and keep them from hyperextending which helps cause I have a bum knee. Plus I got them for 60% off woot so they weren't that much more then the alpinestars.

Full leathers have the knee pucks, knee pads(solid plastic) and shin guards in place(the ones I wear)
If you attempt to wear your knee/shin guards under your leathers I dont think you'll be able to move very well.
And its an ankle supression brace.

I used to wear knee pads called Harbingers. They're soft on the outside so they don't wear you pants out instantly if you accidently touch your knee to the ground. They're made for skateboarding so they're not as expensive as some moto brands. They were the kind that slipped on your leg with no straps, were pretty comfortable but they made you sweat your legs off. I can't seem to find mine but I definately would steal another pair, just got laid off.

It just so happens that I've been thinking really hard lately about kneepads. I was actually going to go look at some this last weekend when I found this thread. I went today and bought some. I read reviews of the Icon and A*. The Icons are $60! The reviews of the A* were less than wonderful. I went to look at them this afternoon, and the two places that the review said were the faults of the A* were already messing up on a brand new pair just from people trying them on. The threads that hold the vinyl flexible part to the kneecap cover were already wearing out/coming loose, and the soft part of the velcro was already fraying and fuzzy. Also, although the flexible straps and nice and comfy, they are very weak (IMO) and they wouldn't hold anything well in a crash. I saw another pair from EVS and tried them on. To me, they are more comfortable than the A* and they're only $20! I can't find the digital camera to get pics of the actual kneepads, but here's one from the EVS site.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b163/Phoenix5922/2009_EVS_Option_Knee_Guards.jpg
IMO they are much higher quality than the A* and more durable. The flex strip between the kne cap and shin protector is riveted on, not sewn and the velcro is MUCH more heavier duty. Also, I paid under $20 out the door for them. I'll be rockin these every time I ride now.
I just got my first set for the forest run on Sunday. The Icon Field Armor ones. I liked them better since the knee floats a little more freely. Works well under jeans and was comfortable wearing for 6-7 hours.
Honestly, I have been riding for about 18 years and I just never thought about it. The first mention I ever saw suggesting it was Matt's post for Sunday's run suggesting minimum gear. My wife and I thank you Matt! Before that it was all basic MSF gear suggestions: helmet, boots, jackett, etc. Nice being part of a responsible community finally. I will not be leaving the house without them now.
QUESTION: Are they supposed to smell like a$$ after 1 day through the forest, heat, rain and gravel?

Went to cycle gear today and they had the A*, ICON and 1 EVS. The A* doesn't have a strap for the knee, and I could see it dragging down over time. The ICONS were actually very good but the knee strap isn't long enough for my man knees, and I don't really need the shin guard. The EVS was like a neoprene blanket and I could see it getting really sweaty real fast. EVS has a large selection so I will probably find one I like and order it online or through CG or whomever has the best price :computer:

I finally settled on the A* kneeguards as my best choice for knee protection...$18.xx @ CG with $5 off coupon :thumb:
The A* kneeguards are unique to each knee (labeled L and R) and are ultra comfortable with vents all over. The velcro straps aren't binding or irritable. The knee cup doesn't strap into place but thats good for me because I have thick legs and the knee guards that do strap into place don't fit me (ICON, EVS, etc.)

The only odd feeling is when I walk because the knee cup slaps my leg - these knee guards can go over or under your jeans but I put them on under.

That is all.
i use them all the time

IMO, doesn't matter what brand you wear as long as you wear them. kneepads for sure on spirited rides, anything more than spirited and its time for leathers.

if you order online, and have big rock hard legs like me, the A* pads seem to have the longer straps to accomodate all that muscle.

Bump. In light of our recent downed rider who saved his knees thanks to this thread.
