View Full Version : 2003 KX65 rebuild- scored piston/cyl

Just pulled the top end apart and the piston/cylinder are scored pretty bad. Does anyone know where I can get the cylinder machined? What's the limit it can be machined to? I'm trying to decide if I should buy a big bore kit and just bolt it all back together, or rebuild the stuff I've got. Any opinions?

Thanks,

Greg

I would def. have it sleeved.

I just looked up Rat Racing. Is there any benefit to re-plating vs. sleeving? What's better for rebuilding down the road? I'm ordering up my rims/tires for motard and hopefully can get it on the track soon.

I've looked at that as well. It's just all bolt on from here then isn't it?

you'll need to get your cylinder bored, or buy a new one. I would just have yours done.

The cylinder is designed for heat transfer through the nyckle seal plating. The cylinder will run hotter and hold more heat with the cast iron sleeve. Also the ports would have to be matched and the the posibility of the head leaking if the sleeve is not set in correctly. A cylinder that is set up correctly with plating will last just as long if not longer because it is a harder surface area. It holds compression better because of the ring seal. Sleeving is old school. It is a get by method by todays motor standards.. Not knocking anyone here but been there done that.. Wes

Thanks for the replies guys. Are their any kits out there like the Athena 82cc big bore? Those are about the same price as having what I've got re-worked, but not legal in the super class (max 80cc correct?).

I'm picking up my bottom end parts today, and should have my cylinder back next week with the 72cc kit. So now I'll have a 100% freshened up motor ready to rock.

I only weigh about 125 so I'm going to wait on suspension mods right now; I'll slap some rims and tires on and get a membership to the katy track to get some practice going.

where'd you send the cylinder off to?

KTMRacer - He seems to know what's going on and I definitely like the location (close to me).

I'm anxious to get it going and try it on the street. Is it worth it to do reed valves as well while I've got everything apart? I don't think I need much power, I'm a lightweight so I'd rather put money to helping me stick to the track.
