RS Track Day FOLLOW UP - 2.14.2009 @ GSS [Archive]

Now, that the first track day is behind us, hopefully everyone and their bikes came back home safe. I was not able to make it after all (14th and wife's cousin decided to drop in from NY - :banghead::banghead:).

So if you went, sound off in this thread. Your views matter to us. We always strive to make a better experience for all of you.
Thanks for your support. Now, go rest for a bit - those legs will be sore in the next couple of days (unless you 'rode like a school girl waiting for a bus' - :rofl: ).

Great day for what it was....started off with the morning being pretty foggy and a slight drizzle on/off from 7-8:59 or so (God answered my prayers). Took it easy first session out and had no traction issues whatsoever (partially in thanks to SCRC for the hook up with Bridgestone sticky's:thumb:), so progressively started riding harder and harder. I forgot how much work is involved with that track (I love it:D), what a workout! There were quite a few spills in the first few sessions, but I expected that with it being the first TD offered up. Overall, excellent day, excellent seat time for the money.... Hopefully you'll be seeing more of me pending this damn economy. :nod:

Back... And I had a blast.

It was my first time out at GSS and can say that it is pretty fun :thumb:.

It gave me a good chance to test out my new bike and to get used to it. Its a huge difference compared to the R1. I cant wait till the 7th so I can actually compare the bike against another track that I have ridden the R1 on before.

The weather held up just long enough for us to get about 6-7 good sessions in, and then the rain came..... Looking forward to the next track day.

I was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo disappointed this morning as I was heading to GSS and hitting little patches of rain heading down 45. I was thinking, "Geeze! First track day and it's gonna be a rain out.":angry7: But it broke open just before 9 and that track surface is VERY VERY good IMO. Zero traction issues with my first day on the BT003's from SCRC. What a convenience it was for John to be there.

I LOVE GSS. After reading all the blah blah blah on here, I thought it would suck, but I am finding out that I really enjoy the tighter more technical stuff. Tis where I make up time on the skinny fellas!:D

It was a well run event, I got plenty of seat time up until about 3pm when it dumped for 10 minutes or so. At that point, I called it a day, but others braved the wet track. I am still in awe over the traction GSS offers, even when wet.

Quite a few run offs, as Dbuck mentioned and a few crashes. Hell, I found myself in an "oh shit" situation or two today, if ya have never rode that track, like me...it's a bit tricky. I like it.:nod:

All and all, very well run event. On schedule, minimal delays, great intruction. Good to see all my homies.:thumb:

In what little experience I have, GSS is a blast on a SM, I just wish there were more days out there this year.

Well I had a blast. I thought for sure it was going to get canlced when I woke up this morning and it was sprinkling outside, but didnt start raining untill after lunch:thumb:

That track is super fun, very technical and a great workout. The concrete is perfect and even with the off and on drizzle I had very little traction issues. I love RS tds, theres such a good vibe in the air and everyone is willing to help out with anything.

All and all....GREAT DAY!

I didnt get there untill 11 and started out really slow being my 1st time out there, But followed a few guys and learned some lines , those are 2 of the tightest turns I have ever seen. But the track was smooth and for the price I would go back again.

Chris, look at my avy and see of you got any of me.:D I was riding with same bike and gear with a yellow #12 on front.

I had a damn good day. Ran off in the front straight, but got right back on.:eek3:
RS always goes out of their way to help out the riders. Dirk, I owe you a set of knee pucks.:notworthy:
Only other one I've ridden is MSRH, but now I love GSS. I like all the direction changes and good surface of that track.
Although the rain put a damper at the end of the day, it was still good to hit some curves on a wet surface. Built my confidence. Back tire slid around a bit, but still was able to get the feel of it.
Now I'm left with the decision, what track tires do I get?:shrug: Gonna part with the 2CT's.:nod:

I was very supprised to hear in the AM mtg when they said passing will be limited to the outside only and not at all first half of day. I conserded this to be a recipe for disaster. On track though we were using good judgment, essentially not following the rule. So why make rules that make no sense. Either way, It was a very good lv 2 group once we got to it.

Instructor quality varied tremendosly. On my round robin the guy we were following could'nt hold a smooth or remotely close to correct line. Pilling us up in every corner. I finally got up with Derik Anderson, who is the best amoung them, and he really helped me out in the sessoin just befoe the rain came. I would follow him, then he would follow me, leading me in faster and better each time.

At times the organization seemed off (first day buggs). Dave made some changes to the run order/grouping after lunch (Without telling everyone) that kinda confused things alittle. No big deal, it worked out fine. We all got alot of good time in.

After the rain broke and we got the track cleared. I rode the rest of the day in the wet. I was able to go as fast at the end as I was earlier in the dry. It made me think more about where I put the bike going into the corner to get it where I needed it to be on the exit to avoid puddles and stay in the drier line.

Also while drying the track out with our cars, I was able to see the corners much better and I belive that was helpful in understanding rather than just being shown the better lines around them.

I am very appritiative and thanked Ridesmart for sticking it out though the rain and getting us back out there afterwards. I was expecting them to call it but they stayed there until 5 even when I was the only bike on track for the last 20 mins or so. The last session ran for 40+ mins uniterupted. :D

My first expirence with Ridesmart and GSS, both will be return visits. :thumb:

i had a blast. especially the session in the hard rain where i had the track all to my self. i figured the instructor was cussing me out in his helmet for making him stay out there in the rain. btw hooligan and kenup283 you guys were looking good out there.

It was first time with RS..i had a great time even though it rained later on we could get quiet a few good sessions...good instructions (trail braking)...i'm definitely looking forward to do more TDs with RS...

When it let up some I came out and said who the F is still out there those guys are crazy but I did'nt want to get my cammera wet seeing how I just toasted my cell phone by forgeting it out in the rain.

you guys were keeping a steady pace in through the rain. One of you had a tinted visor, which I;m not sure how you could see squat though. I changed to the clear before the first session.

haha believe it or not that session in the hard rain was the funnest part of the whole day for me. i had a blue mirror tinted visor on and yes it was hella hard to see between the tint, rain and my visor fogging up and i think the instructor that was out there with me had a tinted shield as well so he was probably going through the same shit.

A big :thumb:THANKS:thumb: to Ridesmart for putting on yet another fantastic trackday. I was worried the weather wasnt going to cooperate at all but it ended up holding out most of the day and after the second session the track really started to feel good even with all the moisture in the air. I think the surface at GSS is the best I have ever ridden on but the parking lot/paddock could use some work. I dont think Im alone when I say it was a mother getting the stands to roll up under the bikes.:keke:

had a good day out there. perfect way to start out the trackday season! rain held out just long enough to get in about 4-5 sessions. I thought about going out in the rain, but by that time my power race's were completely bald on the left side. Even after witnessing the awesome wet traction of GSS first hand in my truck (could BARELY break the tires loose in my 400rwhp truck exiting turns), i didn't feel like pushing my luck on my bald tires.
all in all...had a good time. can't wait for pics/vids to be posted!

I got some good ones of you, but not many in the rain.... couldnt have 3500 bux worth of equipment out and let it get wet... lol . Would have been cool if I had had some type of covering.... The guy who runs that track really needs to get on the ball :keke:

great ride out there on saturday! the last session before the rain started was awesome,, not alot of people on the track and just 20 minutes of getting to know my new bike and working on different things...

I saw them last night! That's so embarrassing! No pics for the others that crashed? We are the lucky two that everyone gets to see! I heard someone crashed in the same spot right before me and I think an instructor crashed there later in the day. It was probably the most pleasant crash I could have had though. I didn't tumble or flip, just slid to a stop. The bike should be an easy fix. I'm going to blame it on the tires ...the were the previous owner's old street tires. Really I dunno what caused it, but I didn't feel squirly or out of control when it happened ...just slid out from underneath me.
