View Full Version : Worlds FIRST powdered Lace

doing lace is a custom painters trick used heavily late 60's and 70's. My buddy is building a 70-ish honda bobber and he wanted something "70's" for the paint.
I decided on a silver flake base coat, topped with a translucent copper and lots and lots of clear. This I sanded and faded into a retro "sunburst' affect with darker at the front and fading to the rear. I then decided to do something totally off the wall, I went to Magic Kustomz and asked how to do lace. He gave me the hook up but swore me to secrecy.
Its never been done with powder coating and I decided I would give it a try.
This tank is completed and is the result of approx. 15+ layers of various powders and many many hours of hand "wet sanding" between layers and bke cycles.
The object was to have it very slightly show up, depends on the lighting and angle can you make out what your looking at. This is the first "pattern" job I've don and probably my finest work to date, the pictures just don't do it justice and show the door I opened to a new level, I upped the bar in the industry with this and I can't wait to do more work like this to refine my technique.
Take a look and tell me what ya think?
Here we have a basic Sporty tank, never been used, stored for over 25 years waiting to be reborn. I did the heavy copper on the ridges and front to separate and define the side panels and top panel. You can barely notice any pattern to the mix from this distance.

Take a close look at the pattern, its hard to get a good shot of it, lots of lace and flowers, again, all done in a silver flake powder layered and sanded in.

just a photo to show how much clear I have on this tank, its super wet and I wish the pictures showed its true electricity it radiates. (dig tha' flowers)

I appreciate the effort(:notworthy:) put into that piece but have a few questions. . .is there an advantage to PC'ing the tank as opposed to traditional paint? Is it more cost effective to PC the lace than have it painted? Did you do it just b/c your a badass and no one has done it before? Spill the beans Mr. Tim, I want to know:hello:

pc is much stronger and durable than a paint job, there is no comparison.
I did this because I am a bad ass and it hasnt been done and its a breakthrough for me and basically everybody in the biz that sees it.
A lace paint job would be in the same price range or more, not many people can do lace. Contact Magic Kustomz if you want it in paint, he's wicked nasty.

I'm a big fan of your work, big fan of PC too so i've seen the PC vs. Paint argument firsthand when i was racing ATV MX & CC races. Only reason i wondered is b/c a tank doesn't(shouldn't IMO) take too much abuse. Mad points to you and YPC for breaking out of the "mold" and trying something new. I've been tracking your PC progress ever since you cooked my 110 mini-motard frame in your homemade garage oven. . .Keep up the HARD work, it definately shows in your finished pieces:thumb:

thanks for the kind words, it was an experiment that involved lots of hand work and sweating it out as each stage baked and flowed out and hoping it went well, then breathing a sigh of relief when we would peek after x amount of time and see all was well.
You never know with powder and this many layers was gamble after gamble.

Does PC loose durability with the multiple layers. Does PC finish have too look like cottage cheese?

"dunno" if it has to? Or it just does? Just wondering, looks cool just looks kinda chunky though. Can it be made smooth like paint?

Can you do some strips or just momocromatic scheme. And can it be sanded flat and be polished like paint?

I believe you are seeing the 'lacing' he is demonstrating in these pics. Check out some of his other work and you will see the difference. :thumb:

The pictures dont do it justice by far. Your the only person that has commented like that, I guess you have to see it in person.
this is smooth as glass, This has been sanded with 600 grit and to finish the job it will get 1000 grit and polished. The high gloss wet sands and polishes just like paint, just tougher, its just a matter of how much work you want to do as finisher, a crapload also depends on the original surface your powdering on, some are smoother and provide a smoother finish w/o assloads hand prep.
I have some black rims in the shop that reflect like a perfect mirror, clean and crisp.

I'm sorry..not trying to bust your balls:D just trying to learn up on this super trick powder coat job your doing. Is this type of job repairable...ie a dent or a scratch? Oh and is it impervious to paint and paint fumes? Sorry for the 20 questions.

Freudian slip...gas and gas fumes:-/ So does that mean that it could be repaired IF you could afford it?

well, it is a fuel resistant high gloss clear I use, so i would hve to say yup on the occasional gasoline spills and fumes.
Repairable with this tank and fender job is possible with the right guy, oh wait, thats me, nevermind.
obviously its not a basic one color job, but I could possibly repair it w/o having to redo, it all depends on the amount of damage.
btw, yer' not bustin my balls, I dont mind answering questions, as long as I have the answers.

Nice work scoot.
Lace with paint is often done with an airbrush, and very prestigious work, and very expensive. It is difficult to get an even coat of lace. I have done it before with checker pattern for an airbrush project. But for a full out paintjob with that color he chose AND with lace, yes you'd be right around the same price range except for the powdercoating being much more durable. It's all personal preference really.
Scoot, I did have one question. On the sanding and buffing like was asked above, I guess it's done the same method as paint correct? 600-800-1000-1500 then hit with a buffer going through all 3 compounds?
