I'd like to hear some suggestions for fun places to ride out in the country that are close to Houston. I'm looking for roads with some turns, not a lot of traffic/lights, not too far from town. Any suggestions?

Not too far from town? Good luck... it takes atleast 25 miles outside of the city in any direction to find any roads worth while. The only decent road in Houston is Allen Parkway. But that usually has lots of traffic and the occasional cop.

Take 149 up through the national forest. I mean its not too far by my definition, and it is a "Fun country ride".

It's not a bad ride, but it's littered with cops and other cyclists. Just go out and explore, that's how you find the good 'secret' roads. :icon_thum

a good ride for someone east of houston near baytown is I-10 and 565. north to 1409. the traffic light. bout 6 nice sweepers.
make a pass or 2 then go up 1409 into dayton. road is kinda rough at spots but they are getting better.
1409 to 146/90 in dayton Right (east)
146/90 into liberty to 563 right (south)
this is a nice scenic road that has a few nice swepers
563 to I-10.
from there u can go east to beaumont or west to houston
later

How about we get a meet together this weekend and take a ride up to College Station. Maybe Suday morning.

head up through Magnolia (149 i think) then 105 to Navasota. After that, there is a ton of good back roads all the way up to College Station.

Try not to get ran off the road by the crotch rockets and traffic.
