So... for those whom wear mesh or vinyl jackets....
I put on a jacket I finally got back from a board member after borrowing it for the last 8 months or so. Its a corona splattered vinyl jacket blah blah...
I put it on a cruised up to Conroe for dinner w family and I could not stand how it felt, moved etc on the freeway. and it breathes a little cooler then leather, yes, but not by much.
Leather fits tighter, doesn't move around, is water proof or resistant, conforms to riding position, protects in a slide, and makes u feel like a power ranger.
So why do u not wear leather on the street? is it more then just price consideration?
just havent gotten around to getting one yet. for the price that comes with a leather jacket i want it to fit and look just right. yet to find the right one.
though i did recently purchase full leathers...not sure how rocking those on the street would be perceived. do other people do that?

I've always been too fat to be comfortable in leather. My textile jacket held up well enough, as everyone at my wreck saw. Plus, the textile had tons of room to store stuff in the pockets. I did a lot of long distance riding out of Albuquerque and the extra storage space came in handy. It was nice to be able to switch gloves and take off my neckwarmer without getting off my bike to remove the seat.

we wear one pieces on forest, fayatteville rides. mine was destroyed but I have a two piece I wear out all the time; even when dancing.
then again, I honestly don't givafck what anyone else thinks... which apparently according to friends may b a contributing factory to my singleness(dates have been turned down cuz they wanted me to take a car on the weekend. so once it was raining. don't judge me.) lol

TMFI!!!
I like both, depends on my mood... I feel extremely comfy in both.
but the mesh was made for a woman otherwise It would fit horribly and that would be uncomfy.

Exactly. As soon as I get caught up on bills and pay off the truck. I'm getting a nice leather jacket. I'm sure once I switch from the mesh/textile jacket I'm sporting now, I will only wear them during the summer.
I know that leather is a hell of a lot better in protect but I want to be able to switch between the two during the summer months. I hate sweating my azz off in stop and go traffic. :thumb:

i have 2 mesh jackets, 2 leather (one is perforated) and one textile. the textile is by far the bulkiest, but it also has the best cold weather lining and is waterproof. I use that for rain/cold (below 55) weather.
I like the leather as far as feeling protected, but pocket space does suck, and the leather is not as nice when the temp is over 95...
regardless though when i hit the countryside i wear as much leather as i can.
oh yeah and the mesh is nice when i am at work and take it off an on all day when i am sweaty and nasty from working on nasty ass cruisers or atv's. i really don't like getting my leather on then!

My textile is more washable - and when you ride in all conditions it becomes very necessary to wash the suit now and then. There was also the cost of the suit, the heat of the summer, the adaptability (with liners) for 4-season riding, and overall fit and comfort.

Like most things in my life, I have evolved.
At first, I wore NO gear.
Then I bought a helmet.
Then I bought gloves.
Then I bought a textile jacket. (cuz it was cheaper)
Then I bought boots.
Then I bought knee pads.
Then I went to the track and bought full leathers.
And I am awaiting the arrival of my first leather jacket for street riding.:thumb:
So it was about ignorance to gear at all, firstly. Then it was about money. Now, I just want to be protected.

I obviously own that jacket among others that aren't leather; so I have owned the perf/vinyl before leather.
But Man! Makes such a difference... weighs a little more, yes, but the protection from wind alone is SOOOOO nice....

On the bigger rides or the spirited rides, several people will show up in full leathers.

I've worn leather since day 1. My jacket is perforated so I've never been ridiculously hot even during the summer. Even then, I'd rather be hot and protected than cool and rashed.
I've lost weight since then though... it's a little loose now. I'd like to downsize... Maybe I should post up seeing if anyone wants to trade (seems like more people add weight than lose weight these days, lol).

so youve worn one mesh jacket, you didnt like it, and now you cant understand why anyone does? thats silly. not all leathers fit the same either. or pants. or shoes. you get the idea. you may have to try a few before you find something that fits you well and has features you like.
leather is great, but has downsides other than price. its less flexible, even when broken in, and come 100+ degree weather, its not so fun to wear. not dogging leather, the protection is the best, its warm, and can look great.
there is gear for every occasion, just have to find what works for you.

after you have a crash with a mesh/textile jacket and that shit embeds it's self in your skin as you skid down the road and you have to scrub that shit out... bet you won't mind 'sweating' a little bit on a 'warm' day...
but i guess some people have to learn the hard way for themselves...
that shit is only good for posing... but i guess you could say it's better then nothing... i wouldn't even wear one to go around the corner to the store... i'll stick with my perforated leather jacket...

I own four mesh jackets of differnt makes/etc. Most still out on loan from new riders along with three of my helmets and a pair of gloves lol.
I just dont see any benefits over leather besides price. And in some cases, 'inspiring' jackets like that corona one aren't necessarily inexpensive either.
I have a sectional leather/perforated woven textile(not cut textile) summer jacket that matches the 600 that has alot more padding and although its see through, the leather upper body of the jacket still makes me feel more comfortable.
Leather can be softened to prevent that 'restrictive' feel and should be continually cleaned w water barrier/protecter to keep it in tiptop shape.
As for looks squeaky... U can ask those whom ride w me; I dont even wash my bike, never have. And the further people are away from me in a crowded bar/night club, the better lol
For me it was was about 90% price factor and about 10% breathability factor :-/

No. I did the Jemez a bunch of times. Never went north of Santa Fe. I did a few trips to Lubbock. One time I rode all the way to Austin and back for Memorial day weekend.

I'm guessing that you're talking about the thin mesh jackets. The one that look like overlapped football practice jerseys.
My jacket was a big bad sumbitch. My first crash was in Albuquerque and I slid on my chest for 30ft and the ONLY damage was a tiny tear. I was wearing the same jacket when I went off 390 in Burton and it held up like a champ.

There is a woven textile(looks like new-age miniature chain male) and cut textile.
the cut textile you can tear w your hands...

I bought a mesh jacket for the price whenever i first started riding. I bought my leather a few months ago. Both are Alpinestars and are large size. I like the way the mesh lets me move and flex. I feel stiff in my leather So I like to use my mesh whenever the weather permits. Both do well in the rain but my leather is priceless whenever its cold

Some leather jackets are uncomfortable, I'm on my 3rd and I finnelly found a leather jacket I like. I have 3 mesh jackets and everyone of them is comfortable, but there unsafe and wouldn't protect crap is I went down. and now I'm used to leather so I like it better
Leather FTW!

I've had the "spinner" A* jacket and a "TZ-1" A* jacket, and both were way to hot and didn't breath for crap, both were perforated. Both were uncomfortable and left a nasty rash from rubbing my neck.
I bought a Teknic Chicane jacket and its really comfortable and breaths great, no rash and it feels very well made.
btw, I got it for $140 new on sale, I've seen that jacket for sale on here USED for almost $200 lol

I have a teknic chicane, it breathes well, but the material around the neck is painful, though as it absorbs more sweat and dirt it seems to feel better. they are a deal though as it seems they may be discontinuing the current design, and should cost 170 or less shipped new in the bag.
my other leather jacket is used joe rocket, and its amazing how comfortable it is for me. bought it used and repaired and love it. no perforation, a very few vents, but its doing well enough for current weather though i have to layer up a lot if i am going to ride more than around town.

I have the A* "Stage" jacket. It has a neoprene type material on the back of the neck/collar to prevent the annoying rubbing. That's what helped me choose that model over the other A* models. The others felt like arse on my neck.
I'd like to get a teknic or vanson as my next jacket.
