Been thinking about doing the minis

I have read through quite a few threads here and many say stick with a Honda. I want to get something that is competitive but not too expense either. I had looked at the Pitster and SSR 140/150s and they seem like you get a lot of goodies for the price. I also considered a little XR50 but the frame seems really small and I like the size and look of the mid-size bikes like the Pitster X4. I would really rather have the midsize. There have been a several recommendations to buy a used race bike already done.

I am really struggling with what to do. The Katy track is really close for us to visit and I want to get something that I won't be too limited on classes. I grew up riding 2-stroke smoke but wonder if it is suitable for the track. SassyChassis will be riding it too so I am leaning toward a 4-stroke.

I want to have fun rather than spending a$$loads of cash trying to keep up with the faster bikes.

Give me some input. Build a bike for mini-motard racing? Buy one already built? I'm starting from scratch here and need to get an idea of what it is gonna cost realistically.

i built one. cost around $1k. some knock off parts, some not. if you wait a couple months you'll have my feedback on the motor. right now it is POWERFULL. its a 140cc that i got off ebay.

but if you are going to race it constantly, consider the fact that with a 2 stroke i was changing piston and rings ever other weekend. (racing everyweekend 4 motos / weekend) to keep my shit running strong. not real sure about how the kx60s and things like that hold up ring and piston wise, but 2 stroke are definitely higher maintenance.

I just started working on the little girls KLX-140. It is a bigger bike.
I had scooter tires mounted on it. I drive it mostly.
I also have one of the little chinese bikes. She loves that to death. I haven't had any problems with that little bike and I have a supply line for parts.

I plan on getting her riding the bike more and getting her some track time in Katy on both bikes. If she likes riding, I will give her a choice between the 140 or a mini-GP chassis like a NSR-50 or something like that. She just needs more seat time first (don't we all.)

Sounds like there a few good options. I am looking more at motard than dirt at this point though I might end up with two sets of wheels with one for dirt.

Guys with KLX / DRZ 110's with big bore kits seemt o be doing really well at the Katy track. Good for TMGP, mild dirt riding, and probably OIK for stunting if you get the bug.

Two stroke 65's and 85's will probably go a whole season on a top end and 2 seasons on a crank. They work fine at the track, just take more skill and familiarity to get them to perform at their finest.

Sounds good. I am a little confused about the displacement limits especially with the big bore kits. I am leaning toward a 4-stroke motard. It looks like there are 140's and 150's out there but they are on the high side of what I would consider spending. What is the displacement of these 110's with a kit?
