Yes. Furthermore, you will get LIVE video footage of the lines. Basically sit in the classroom, and watch a bike cam of where you are supposed to be at all times. The track layout as a prop coupled with the video footage, helped me ALOT at both TWS and Cresson. Dirk will teach you the race lines.

Then, the dudes that purchase bike cam videos, you get to watch the video between sessions. I have never been in level 1 with RS, but level 2 instruction, with Dirk Anderson (screen name Diggler) is extraordinary.

My suggestion would be pay very close attention in the classroom to the lines the first 1/2 of the day then after lunch, let it hang out!:D

Im stoked! Gonna ride level 4, this time, from the get go. Hope to see yall out there.:thumb:

I would say that 1:56s are probably good for level 4. Depending on the turnout maybe sub 2:00. When I asked that same question they told me it was more about what levels of passing or being passed you are comfortable with. Elbow to elbow, with no restrictions, then Level 4. I run 2:02's, for now:keke:, at TWS and Level 4 was fine with RS.

I ran 1:34's at Cresson, in level 2 and there was major traffic for me and the passing zones made it hard to get around bikes, liter bikes specifically, cuz there are only 2 little short straights. Makes it hard to follow the rules of no passsing in corners.:topsecret: I could have moved up, but being my first time there, with the blind corners and elevation changes, I didnt feel comfortable.

Ciaka will chime in and let ya know everything.

definately.:thumb:

That is advanced at TTD isnt it?

Level 3 at RS is the Ty Howard school, so it actually lvl 1, 2, 4. or Novice, Int, Adv. The school is sperate but runs with lvl 4.

Correct me if I am wrong Ciaka or Diggler or dhdrider.

add me to the list. I'm in it. Advanced sessions, whatever level that is.

Ridesmart
10-13-2008, 06:49 PM
No need to correct.

With RideSmart, there are 4 levels:

Level 1 - drag racers
Level 2 - stunters
Level 3 - squids
Level 4 - Harley D squad

J/K....:D:D:D :rofl::rofl::rofl:

With RideSmart, here is the spread of groups:

Level 1 - Novice
Level 2 - Intermediate
Level 3 - Advanced/Ty Howard Race School
Level 4 - Advanced/Licensed Open Practice

Recommendations:

Level 1: This level is recommended if you have never done track days before, or have done very few. Also, I would recommend this one for people with very limited track experience AND being new to a particular track.

Level 2: This level is recommended for those who have attended Level 1 a few times (depends on each rider), and can consistently hold the line in a session. In addition, these people find that they are passing most in level 1 and are not uncomfortable with being passed by others. If you find that you consistently get passed by others cause traffic scenarios in turns, you may want to consider level 1.
NOTE: You will know if you are causing traffic in turns because right upon you finishing the turn and starting to stand the bike up on throttle, you will see several bikes zooming by you on either side...

Level 3: This level is recommended for people with many track days attended. They consistently hold the line and have no problems with close quarters riding and passing. People in this level will be out on the track with the advanced and race licensed riders. In this session, there will be no 'no passing zones/rules' (for obvious reasons).
This level provides an opportunity for a rider to be coached on one x one basis by the awesome Ty Howard. He will coach you, video tape you and critique you in each class session. This is a great stepping stone if you have been riding fast and want to propel yourself into the next level of track riding.

Level 4: This level is recommended by anyone who has advanced track riding skills, and will not be startled by close passes/buzzes, etc. In this level, the track is open for hard riding. Licensed racers are frequent visitors in this level, getting practice sessions prior to race days.
If your lap times fall in the 2:15 category for TWS, this is not the group for you.

We often have people who want to gauge group skills and trying to figure out where they fit by comparing their top speed on the street to a group's skill set.
Top speed attained on the street should not be used as a gauge for which level one should enroll.

If you have any questions at all, please let us know and we will be more than glad to help you get answers.

If you are in doubt, it is easier to register for the lower level, and then have an instructor follow you for a couple laps to see if he agrees with you moving up to the next one.

Take care for now.

So we hope to see you there. You are a big LSTD fan, and we understand that. They are a very nice bunch of folks. People have their allegiances, which is totally understandable. All we ask is keep an open mind and a positive attitude, and you cannot but have a great experience.

However, believe it or not...when i was with u guys at TWS, and guy jones was talking in the classroom about seeing snakes, deer, turtles and stuff on the track ...i thought he was joking and being sarcastic (reality says, no trees, cars, animals etc..)... then two sessions later, in level 2, a REAL freakin deer runs across turn 6!!!!!

JK...TY focuses on teaching the fast race line around the track as well as things like braking techniques including trail braking, safe passing zones, body positioning and bike setup like proper gearing.

ok, pardon my dumbass for not realizing this sooner, but the day before is Halloween and I plan on being up pretty late and consuming adult beverages.:D Only one day a year I'm allowed to party with a bunch of wholesome girls wearing slutty outfits, I'm not gonna miss out on that opportunity.:keke: Does RS offer 1/2 day sign ups at the track itself? I have seen this offered at several venues previously and I know it may be on a TBD basis based on the # of participants registered.

Thanks,

Take the Ty School once you're feeling too fast for the intermediate level.
It is run in the advanced group and there are some very fast guys there sometimes. You don't want to be a road block to them and you have to be ready to be passed really close and fast.

...some advice to first time riders:

Forget about all this you have heard that at the track you gotta go as fast as you can. Save this for when you start racing.
Here, you should control your speed to the point where it is comfortable for you, and you alone. Leave the Johnny racer attitude home and you will have a blast. If you come to your first track day trying to prove yourself to others, I can see troubles and scars on your bike already. You will ride in your own skill level type of group. Others will be in similar situation as you are. So continue using your head and good judgment/common sense, and you will make it through with a bunch of awesome pictures to prove it.

And the most important thing is - to have fun out there. This is your day so take advantage of it, use the instructors to ask questions and learn as much as you can. That is what they are there for. They will be busy but make sure to let them know you have questions to answer.

Congrats, and enjoy!!!!!

Does any one have any ideas how Ridesmart conducts a track day? I have done one with LSTD and TTD before. I normally ride the novice group but I want to be sure that the afternoon portion of the novice group is pretty much open and run at your own pace. I wanted to go ahead and do intermediate but I lowsided the bike in the neighborhood not to long ago and I feel a little shakey on it, probably just nerves but I want to get my groove back before moving up. Thoughts?

As long as you don't park it going into the turns. I'm slow and I approach the carousel close to 135 mph. Hello to all once again.

Status on space fill up is:
Level 1 - still at least 10 spaces or so left
Level 2 - more spaces left than in lev1 (don't know exactly).
Lev 3 - spaces available
Lev 4 - lots of space

This is the extent of what I know about the spaces.
However, here is the thing. We have been noticing a trend by customers to wait until the last day before registration. Doing this predisposes the school to many, many walk ups. We are fine with customers walking up to register/ride, but at the same time, we do not want to find ourselves in situations where we have to deal with customers that get very irate and vulgar when they are told the spots are all taken. We wish all of you could ride, but the reality is there are only a certain amount of spaces for each riding session.

We will be taking our online registration links down on Thursday NOON for Nov 1 track event at MSRH. This will give us time to ensure we have an accurate count. Anyone wishing to register after Thursday NOON, will be asked to call 512.469.9491. Spaces will be available on first come first serve basis. Anyone who knows they will show up on Saturday am to pay/ride, should be calling 512.469.9491 immediately to make sure their name is on the rider roster. Only the names on the rider roster will be allowed to participate.

OK, enough formalities. I have been looking at the weather for the last few days and what I see makes me :) .
Looks like it will be a great day with no clouds and in the 80s during the day. If you are confident you are going to attend, now is the time to make sure you are registered. I am not attempting to make people to commit to get their money. This is the case of us wanting to prevent a flood of walk ups on the day of registration.

I hope to see you all there. I have now committed to go and am looking forward to this track day.

Take care.

Take care.

I say if you don't plan ahead you run the risk of not riding and should have no right to piss and moan. I signed up a month in advance, I shouldn't have to suffer for someone else's lack of planning.

I'm way stoked about this event, and the weather is going to be GREAT

Just found out that our usual tire support will not be able to make it out to the event at MSRH.
In light of the event, we will still have tire support, however it will be very limited. There will be no tire sales that day, and any tire changing/swapping, etc, may not be happening right away. I would plan to make sure you have whatever tires you plan to use mounted when you show up to avoid possibilities of not having time to swap out.
I am sure minor tire adjustments may be possible, but please plan proactively to avoid any disappointment.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience. We hope you understand that these events are out of our control.

Suspension support with OROR will be available during the event.
If you plan on having suspension tuned, it will be a good idea to do this the night before. Roger gets pretty busy during the day, and it is regular to see line ups at the trailer for suspension tuning (read - may impact your riding time). Again, please try to plan proactively with this respect as well.

Hope to see you all there.

maxgs
10-29-2008, 09:44 AM
The track is entirely different so it's hard to compare. At TWS, large bikes can use horsepower to compensate for cornering speed thus lowering their laptimes. At MSRH horsepower can be a bit of a liability. It's much more about riding a good line, being able to effectively flick the bike to turn in, and braking. And, on the big bikes, being smooth on the throttle.

I think lap timers are great. If you plan on racing next season, as do I, a lap timer will let you know where you stand compared to everybody else. You can try a different line threw a particular turn and see if it helps increase laps times. Once you have some good track seat time and your actually riding confidence, not just riding past your limits, you can set goals for the day like "OK I ran a 2.40 last time I was here, my goal is to break 2.00"

Now a lap timer your first or second trackday is unnecessary.

But Dean You nead a LT homie.

it was cool putting faces to screen names, I met a bunch of you guys today.

MSR Houston is AWESOME! i will return to that track
Its funny the first few sessions I really didn't like it that much, I had a hard time finding good lines. but by the end of the day a I felt really comfortable out there and felt like I was moving pretty good, for only being my 3rd track day and riding a girls bike [sv650s]

oh and my apologies to the rider of the black something or other on the very last session of the day. i had been trying to pass you on the outside and you kept running wide and I'd run out or track, and then you'd plan out accelerate me, so after i guess 3 full laps I tried to mass on the inside and wouldn't you know it you went tighter than the past few times and we almost had an incident.

I'm really sorry dude, I bet that scared the heck out of you, i looked around for you to apologize in person but didn't see you

first day for me on msrh, i was going soooooooooooooo slow, wow, not used to that track at all, im going to the hill for some personal technical experience.

as for TWS thats my track, i can roll MUCH better out at TWS (1.56's), msr wore me out, after the first session i HATED it, i bet i didn't even break under 2.00 but after lunch i finally got kicked out of level 2:eek3: after passing the whole pack, sorry for those i stuffed towards the end, i got a couple complaints dave told me from fast/close passing, i was running a level 4 pace at the point.
so then i went to level 4 and got passed:rofl: i was wore out, and obviously have not had NEAR enough seat time out there yet, to get compfortable, i know i got another 5-10 easy seconds that can be shaved with a little more time out there
that track is just not my cup of tea yet, im still way better at the highspeed stuff like tws.

overall nice day, and good to meet some of yall.

3.) work on the back section _ Chris u won't pass me there next year :thumb:
4.) def my entrance to diamonds edge. i can probsably gain 5 seconds if I work on the straight leading to diamonds edge all the way til I get to the front stright.

Had a great time yesterday and another great event Ridesmart.:thumb: There was a HUGE turnout and sure that makes for packed grids, but hey, you can pay twice the money for lighter groups, or pay the relatively inexpensive prices ridesmart offers, and be happy with the bargain. But to complain about it, makes little sense to me.

Had a blast today hangin with all my boys. I figure by mid season, next year, we will all be in level 4 dicing it up and having a blast.

Good to see all the regular crew, plus nice to meet you Grincy, Gixxerbill, Gixxergeezer and a few others. Hard to remember names.

Thanks Curt, for draggin my ass down there on Friday, the save space, so that myself, you, solracer, hooligan, amanda, r6nick, striker, woody and dean would have a nice place to pit.

The dudes that had their trailers and trucks, under the paddocks, taking up valuable space, while other riders had to pit in the sun, you suck.:keke:

The track was in great condition, and Ridesmart did a HELL OF A JOB keeping things on schedule considering the turn out.

Only concern, is that I saw some riders, with questionable skills, in level 4. Because.... I am not that fast, but never have I had to duck and dive through traffic like that before. Not in the highest level. Usually I am the one being ducked and dived.:D I dont know what you guys can do though because you have serious turnouts and you manage what you do have, well.
It makes me feel fast anyway, so secretly, I kind of like it!:eekspin:

anyway, plan on going to cresson, so see yall there.:thumb:

Pretty much my sentiments exactly.

Great job Ridesmart.

Big turnout that was handled well and did not feel too crowded.

Not sure what vid you were watching but his lines were dead on until he got in traffic and had to pass!!!

And by mechanical problem you mean tucking the front!! That is rider error dear!!!!!!

Well.... Dean hadn't ever had his suspension checked after he bought the bike. After his excursion, I pushed on his clipons and almost bottomed the front forks. I think Dean has been running out of fork travel. Once the fork bottoms, the chances of immediately losing traction on the front tire are pretty high.

Is this hate on Dean Day? I counted six missed apexes on the first lap, none of which influenced by traffic

HA HA!!! Hate on Dean day!!!! that boy has no fear....but just an FYI to Dean, riding the track is much cheaper if you don't have to make repairs between each trackday! LOL! Just pokin' at ya man.

Well in my opinion his lines were good, not perfect but who's are!! Everyone has little differences!!

And Dean, needs to learn the basics! Anyone who crashes 3 out of 5 trackdays need to slow down and learn some skills!!!

And it pissed me off what he said to Amanda!!!

Lets all keep emotions and drama to pms please?

I could have had a lot better lines, I feel I was lucky to have what I had yesterday, my allergies are killing me, and I was physically tired and prolly shouldn't have even ridden. Thanx RS, had a great time, good people, thanx to maxgs and gang for the pit spot, thanx to dean for the trailer ride, you've gotten a lot fastster since I first rode with you! All in all I think it was a good day, more people on grid, but handled well.

The Ty Howard school was great! Thanks Ridesmart...:thumb:

Some constructive criticism:
The only suggestion I would make is to regulate the riders between level 2 and 3-4 a little more. There was a wide array of speed(fast and slow) in level 3-4 which can make things a little crazy. I had more close calls then any CMRA practice day I've ever done.

Other then that it was a great trackday.
Great weather too!
