It really depends on where your wanting to go. 99% of jobs are "Union" jobs on the waterfront. Meaning you have to be part of the local union. weather it Local 24, 28, or 1351. Local 24 is the "Deep Sea" union where they take care of the ship to shore work. Local 28, has all the "M & R" (maintenance and repair) and turck drivers, and 1351 is the "clerks and checkers" union. You could technically walk into any one of these union halls and start working off your s.s. card but I wouldnt suggest that. That would involve sitting around alot waiting (wishing ) on a job.
I know alot of people who actually work for the Port but getting on there is a "brother in law" thing. They still hire off the "gool ol boy" system.
If you want, pm me and I'll tell you where to go if you really want to get on out there. Just fair warning, it aint easy, and it"ll take a while.

he's right. Union is all about brother in law. It took me almost 3 years to get in the Boilermakers Union. It was worth the time and work to get in. I made stupid money for a long time but got tired of traveling and missed the wife and kids. The Port would be a great place to work. Good money, retirement, insurance, and close to the house.

You may want to get your TWIC. After September, anyone without it will be refused entry at many of the plants and ports. It takes a while to get one so I am sure there will be some hiring going on when all of those procrastinators are waiting on their cards. Something else to put on your resume.

Great heads up for everyone,
We all have ours here at the plant, im curious to see how many cant get one due to prior history. Its gonna be intersting when they wont let them in the plant and cant keep their job due to the past... We will see, might open up the job market

Unless you've been convicted of murder in the last 5 years getting it won't be a problem. Just FYI its gunna cost you 125 bucks. I work with a bunch of felons and I havnt heard of anyone yet not being able to get their card.

You mean pre-enrollment. To enroll you must schedule an appointment and enroll at one of the locations.

Don't forget to save the receipt for Uncle Sam. It is a write-off.
