Advice on Jackets

I'm looking to buy a riding jacket. This will be my first real sports jacket being that foolishly over the many years riding, I've been guilty of riding with only a full face helmet and gloves.
Anyways, anyone with any good advice on fit, protection, comfort, and ideas on which riding jackets will give me the best for the buck. :thumb:

Look for closeouts. A* TZ 1 is what I currently rock and I love it. This is going to be somewhat sujective bacause the fit is always different for different people. I would suggest going to MU because they had some on sale and they would be able to help you out with the fitment.

If you already found something and are unwilling to wait for them to order it try ebay. That's where I got mine and I paid a very very good price for mine.

Are the Textile Mesh jackets not that good?

Leather is just much better if you go down. Honestly I have 2 of each and switch back and forth as I change my riding style. Everyone will say that the leather is better but the textile has been proven to hold up in crashes also. However since these are massed produced I can be almost certain that no two are exactly alike (just like no 2 crashes are exactly the same). That's where a lot of subjective viewpoints come alive.

In general..
Mesh < Textile < Leather. However a poorly constrcuted leather will not protect as well as a very highly constructed textile, etc.

textile is just as safe to a certain speed and after that it is crap. How many racers you see wearing textile suits? Get a GOOD leather jacket with perforations. In the winter just put in the liner and keep going. Personally I wear leather suits year round. I wear a wind breaker under my suit to keep warm in the winter. I am good to 40 degrees with that set up.

The only jacket I have right now is a textile. I was in your situation and I got the Joe Rocket (it was either the atomic or phoenix) textile jacket and it's worked out great. Mine has plenty of armour and a built in back protector and comes with a removable liner that is pretty warm. Leather is a better option, but there are some good textiles out there.

i have a few jackets
mesh and leather

the mesh one is very comfy and breaths great, but if i went down in it i know it wouldnt hold up that great

the leather is comfy, but heavy and hot.
but if i went down in it, my upper body would, depending on speed, would be well better off than the mesh

go with a teknic leather jacket, there perforated jackets breath good and its very pertective

Don't know how much you have to spend, but I use the first jacket as a summer and the second as winter. Can't beat the quality and fit. AND if you want to get really serious, they zip into track pants, so you could make a 2 piece out of them. Which is a nice option.

go with dainese if you do get a leather jacket. Very comfortable and good looking, and highly breathable once you remove the liner.

i have a Icon textile jacket and it is a good jacket and not the expensive around $200. It feals like the material is tuff not like the crappy joe rocket mesh. Icon is all about the street riders. Go to GP they will hook you up there are one of our sponsors.

The only thing that Action Motor Sports gave me with my purchase was a HJC Draco model full face helmet, two caps, and a T-Shirt. I wish they would've offered me a jacket because I'd would've jumped on that. (At least they let me choose the color of helmet. lol)

I have a teknic leather jacket I wear everyday yeah it gets hot but I rather prepare for the worst and hope for the best before that jacket I had a joe rocket textile that held up a fall at 120mph the only thing that messed it up were the paramedics

get a perforated leather jacket if you haven't gotten on already. I've read many after crash reports on other sites where the textile stuff actually melted from the heat generated from the friction of sliding across the pavement... not cool at all.

Get something that fits as best as possible, then go and get it altered to fit your perfectly. There are quite a few affordable options in and around houston for leather working.

Check out Houston Shoe Hospital for leather repairs, as I am about to do for my ice hockey goaltender gear which has some split seams on the blocker glove. They've got the tools to get into weird corners and crevices in your gear to fix things.
