NEW YORK—A visibly distressed Alex Rodriguez announced Tuesday that controversial baseball figure Pete Rose has sent him dozens of scandalous text messages containing sexual innuendo, salacious encouragement, and obscene batting pointers. The Yankees third baseman, who has been texting with MLB's all-time hits leader for two years, said the messages included such remarks as "Nice stroke Big Rod, feels good," "You're so hot, keep it up for me," "Way to connect," and "Find a hole and just grind it. Grind it. Grind it. Harder." "I guess it helped my hitting, at least at first," Rodriguez said. "But eventually I realized what was happening... I can't believe Pete Rose would betray my trust like that." According to Rodriguez, the latest text message from Rose read "I wish I had you when I was managing the Reds—had you inside me."

Alex Rodriguez, needy superstar, wanted another baseball mentor. Pete Rose, hit king and pariah, needed a baseball outlet and a path to baseball legitimacy. Through the magic of text-messaging, the game's best active player and its all-time hit leader/controversy magnet have become e-confidantes.
According to a story posted on ESPN's Web site Monday, Rose has served as an electronic hitting coach of sorts for Rodriguez since the two met at a Las Vegas mall in January of 2006. Rodriguez sat with Rose while Rose signed autographs, asking about Rose's career, and when he left, A-Rod said, "Text me - let's talk hitting."
Rose has branched out to other topics, too, including career advice. During last offseason, while A-Rod was agonizing over whether to opt out of his Yankee contract or return to the Bronx, Rose texted A-Rod: "Got five reasons why you should go to Boston."
"Name 'em" was the reply.
"1. You'll win. 2. You can play shortstop until Mike Lowell leaves and you love shortstop. 3. You'll hit behind Manny and in front of Big Papi. 4. You'll hit 800 home runs with that short porch. 5. The Red Sox fans will love you because you told New York to go screw itself. But I take it all back if Mark Cuban buys the Cubs. You'll end up as part owner of the team and that's a pretty nice ballpark to play in, too."
Two days later, A-Rod re-upped with the Yankees for $275 million. According to Monday's story, the 67-year-old Rose congratulated Rodriguez for being loyal.
One winter, Rodriguez invited Rose to his home in Miami - where he has a batting cage - and wanted Rose to work with him. But Rose couldn't make it. Rose told Rodriguez he knows his swing well enough and can follow on television.
The two prepare differently - Rodriguez is a video junkie, devoted to mental and physical preparation, and Rose was more of a "see the ball, hit the ball" hitter. They'd address each other "Hey, Mr. MVP," "Hey, Hit King."
"What did I want to gain from him? Well, I mean, it's obvious," A-Rod told ESPN. "He's the world's all-time leading hitter. I mean, it's kind of like, if you're a writer, why wouldn't you want to talk to Ernest Hemingway? You know? If you're a painter, Picasso. Baseball ... Pete Rose. That's just what it comes down to."
"Well, if I wanted to talk to somebody about hitting, I'd talk to me, too," Rose said.
He added, "I think I do the same thing for A-Rod that Sparky (Anderson) did for me, and Sparky did for Joe (Morgan) and Johnny (Bench) and Tony (Perez). I just keep patting him on the butt and telling him how good he is, because he is. A-Rod is the Kobe of baseball. Talking to A-Rod is like talking to Michael Jordan, Brett Favre.
"I communicate with other guys, but he is the No. 1 guy because he is the best player. A-Rod is not a know-it-all by any stretch. Even though he's going to be the home run king, he still wants to learn. I think it's great that the highest-paid player in baseball likes to hear my advice about hitting. It's like I'm communicating with Babe Ruth. He's going to be the next Babe Ruth. I mean, I'm convinced of that. Not because I text him, either. It's just he has that kind of ability, and I understand pitching today. He's going to hit 800 home runs."
During the 2006 season, Rodriguez lost Rose's cell phone number and they finally reconnected while A-Rod was in a slump. Rose texted: "See if you can knock the pitcher's head off. Go the other way. Pete." A-Rod homered twice and singled in the next game. Rose texted: "You're coachable, brother. Pete."
Rodriguez, who could not be reached for comment last night, even asked Rose about playing in the postseason; A-Rod's October woes are the one pockmark on his Yankee career.
"How'd you prepare for the postseason? Alex."
"Know the pitchers. And just relax. Relax. Have fun. And the only way to have fun is to win. Pete."
"Communicating with A-Rod keeps me close to the game," Rose said. "In my way, I can be involved in the game, as I'm watching. I'm still around the athletes and understand them, if I ever get a shot to get back. It's not like the game is passing me by."
