well im sure everyone knows i got that new 450 smr
with the help of smj and ktmracer i finally figured out the problem. (vapor lock with hoses running to catch can)
so now i just want to get some advice from the pros.
ktmracer i know you told me alot of it in our call last night but just want to help out mike jones and matt l since they have the same bike
I have some questions
1. break in before track day?
ktmracer i believe you told me , run it for a while and before the trackday, change the oil to a semi synthetic blend for the trackday then full synthetic after
About how many "miles" or "hours" before i should do that 1st oil change (i have trail tech on the bike now and im ready to break it in)
i was told to keep changing the revs just like when breaking in a street bike
2. what are some scheduled tuneup periods ?
xx hours = change this , check that etc
3. any other tips that you might recommend im all ears
thanks
greg

Normally after i build a motor i run it for 30 minutes in front of a high velocity fan to make shure there are no leaks and it runs good. The oil that KTM ships with is good oil usually but there is really no way of telling what you have in it. KTM switched brands so many times it was dificult to figure out whats what. So i would do just that. Run the bike for 30 minutes at a fast idle. Then drian the oil and go back with a good name brand oil. I know there are so many out there they are all good stuff if you use the correct oil. I usr REPSOL since they are my sponcer and because it is great oil. PLUG!!! By changing revs it is not really going to make a difference. I would check the valves now befor track day. Remember what i told you last night. I have seen them tight from the factory. Better safe than sorry.. A bent valve because of none maintenece KTM will frown on that and say it is your fault. It is a race bike. Trust been there done that. Just do your normal prep. Red loctight. A racers best freind.. I would get rid of the stock catch can and put the one from supermoto engineering. I use it and it is great. Wes

Check the fork pinch bolts. Make shure they are tourqed orrectly and not too tight. It will affect the fork and put them in a bind. Check the clutch cover bolts.. W

Told you that thing would start easy. Now when it is stone cold. Pull choke. Pull decompression lever. Kick through 5-6 times. Let compression lever go. Set the auto compressor. Click at tdc and kick it all the way through. don't touchthe throttle. Should fire right up... Woo Hoo . Looks like we are going to have a track full of KTM's. Sea of Orange out there kicking it. Now remember im an old fart. You young guns take it easy on me...:thumb:

try this....accelerate into 3rd gear up into a corner, soon as you start leaning the bike, go back into 1st gear....and get ready to slide :D

could a SM bike like this be ridden on the street or do you have to rebuild them too often?

A supermoto bike can be ridden on the street. But there are differences between the full race bike and the streetable models. Like cush drive hubs so it is not so hard on the tranny or a cush drive clutch hub. Of course Horn lights and signals. Dot tires. Pass inspection. I have a KTM 380 2 stroke sx that is street legal. Motocross bike on the street. What a blast..

How much would it cost to build a reg KTM 450 SMR that is street legal (i.e. with horn, lights, etc)

Your question i confusing. Do you mean how much to build a streetable bike out of a mx bike?. Or is your legal now but you want to build it to race??

To make it street legal. About $500.00 plus tires and or supermoto wheel set. wheels sets start around $1100.00 and up without tires..
