Slipper clutch... Whats the difference from stock?

I always read a bunch of mags where the riders praise bikes that come with or have been modified with a slipper clutch. What does a slipper clutch do and what are the benefits?

from my understanding it limits the amount of power going to the rear wheel by slipping a little and helps get the rpms up quicker into the meat of the power band.


essentially makes the power come on smoother...But that’s just what i think i could be way off...

yes,as the name implies, it works like this:

You're going , say, 90 miles, on 5th gear, then you have to slow down to make a curve, downshift, a couple down, and let out the clutch, without a slipper cluch the speedd of the bike will rise the RPM too much causing the rear wheel to hop or kinda slide, not a good feeling, let me tell you, you would have to blip the throttle to match the rpm with the speed of the bike.

With a slipper clutch, the rpm won't go as high, thus cancelling the effect that i mention above, because it's like the head of a ratchet, one way it will engage, the other it will just, well, clicks , I mean, it won't engage.

This is helpful when you ride spirited on the backroads or racing, and some bikes, like some Ducatis, the clutch you can adjust to give it more/less slip.

yes, but they're very expensive. New bikes are coming out with this feature like the 05 kawasaki 636, 06 yamaha r6 and if i'm not mistaken the 05 gixx 1000 also.

my 636 has one, its a nice addition :icon_thum . i dont have to blip the throttle as often as my pervious bikes.

slipper clutch work great when u r learning and when u are racing as a hobby. when u start going pro it can limit u some. like in world superbike they take them off and run a normal clutch. thats what john at yosh said bout the new 05 gsx-r 1000. it can limit ur hp coming out of a turn but makes it easier to ride. just the riders said they didnt like it. so they took the slipper clutch off. only prob i have changed 4 2005 gsx-r 1000 clutches the past 2 months. they have the slipper in them. honestly i think its probly the guys dont know how 2 shift lol. its realy up 2 u man and what u want.

i dont think i would like a slipper clutch, but i've never rode a bike with one before. With a slipper it just seems like theres more to go wrong or break. I like my regular clutch just fine.

Actually most of the AMA and World Superbikes have slipper clutches in them. A "slipper clutch" only works on decel, not while accelerating. It help control the rear tire traction at high rpm downshifting when the tire is trying to feed the force back into the motor.

my zx6rr came with a slipper cluch.its a lot smother down shift in high rps's than a stock cluch.

kawasaki has been putting them in bikes for a long time. my 1998 zx7r has a slipper clutch in it stock and you can put thinner or thick steel plates in the clutch to have more or less slip. :icon_thum

Of course, my K5 has one. Of the two dozen bikes I've owned, it is the first one I've had that has one . I love it. You can concentrate more on the curve instead of the downshift!!!!
