So I'm going to be getting my first bike here soon and I keep hearing so many different things. My freiends say get fuel injected and my dad says carbeurated, I don't know if he is just old school or what. So I'm hoping that someone will be able to help me realize and understand the differences besides the choke in cold weather.

I have 1 of both and by far the fuel injected is better. Being new down here since august, my f2 which is carbeurated hasnt had any problem on firing up at all and that is 15yrs old.

All in all, get what you like and are comfortable on

I guess your Dad would also tell you to get a boom box to listen to while riding your carb bike huh? Or maybe you should go get a string and tie two cans together to talk to your friends instead of a cell phone. Really that's how much sense that would make.

Most "beginner" bikes are not going to be FI.

Look at the best starters...
Ninja 250 = carb
Ninja 500 = carb
SV650 = carb

Look at the race bikes...
ZX-6R = FI
600RR = FI
R6 = FI

carb bikes will be cheaper, but not necessarily any less cool or worse.

Buy the new Honda 1000RR it's a great starter bike ;) and save money on a helment and dont get one, your just going to tie it on the back seat anyway.

carbed is just fine if you ride it once a week you wont have to clean carbs.

Fuel Injected are so much easier to ride, super smooth on the throttle compared to a carbed bike and give you way less issues with starting. Specially if you ride regularly waiting for that bish to warm up sucks. My first bike was a carbed R6 but I put up with it, now I have an 08 and man is FI oh so sweet. Only thing is any FI bike is likely gonna be newer to it will cost you more. If you don't plan on riding daily and your looking to save the $$$ carb will work just fine.

thanks! looks like i should prob just look for a fi then, sounds like it will be less issues and easier to handle and what not.

FI is better, but better isn't necessarily better for your first bike. I would say go with something a little older and cheaper. Carburetor FTW

I cant believe thaty no one has mentioned the sensitivity of FI vs the smoothness of carbs....

Throttle response can be very very good and unintimidating off of carbs, fuel injection tends to be more sensitive (faster reacting) which is not allways the best thing for a newer rider.....

Rolling off the throttle was much smoother with my carbed F3 than with my FI gsxr 6. The fi gsxr 6 felt a bit snatchy, wheras the f3 was always smooth and linear.

FI or carbs are fine, just make sure and run it regularly with carbs...

How about this one, who cares whether or not it's carbs or FI as long as you're on 2 wheels?

that's what i'm talkin bout right there....just get whatever your pockets can afford.....but remember to factor in cost for PROPER gear.

fi is just better , better fuel distribution and , driveablity!

in tx the weather is not realy that cold that you would have to worry about the choke, i have had both and the carbs are fine but they can be a bit more finiky than a fi bike, any way its all in prefrince, but i think most of the people you ask will say get the fi!

1. "Sensitivity" in FI can be tuned out, and not all come to you "sensitive" anyway.
2. Carbureted, fuel injected, doesn't matter, each has it's own unique issues.

The important thing is what type of bike you want to get. If you're new, don't get the 100+ hp bike as your first bike, the Ninja 250/ Ninja 650/ SV 650, etc are all good starters.

FI/ carb'd, doesn't matter, just get the right bike and if it has FI or carburetors, it's all good.

Finally somebody gets it right (i.e. agrees with me).

There are more important things to consider before worrying about FI or carbs.
Cost, displacement, type (cruiser/sport), and year model.

FI. Forget carbs, they suck. Anyone who says carbs over FI is either very very picky, a racer, a tuner, or misinformed. FI works 99.99999999% of the time. Carbs gum up, leak, drip, fill oil pans with gas, sputter blah blah blah. SUre, in great shape they work great, but why take a chance? FI will start up an run 100% after sitting in a garage untended for 10 years.

Peter, Peter, Peter, let's not get dramatic. While FI is inherently more reliable than carbs, FI has it's issues too. They clog, they fail, the fuel pump can have issues, electronics fail frequently, bad fuel will cause poor performance, etc, etc, etc. No fuel will let any mechanical thing sit for 10 years without fail.

I think what the majority of folks are saying is that neither of the two items are something that should be the first consideration when buying a first bike.

For the record too, the '03 and up SV is fuel injected (I think Jonpatrick made that statement that SV's are all carb'd).

I have to agree as carbs being great for a beginner bike...

not only for a smoother more power-controlled ride but also for the simple fact that if you don't have a mechanical background you can learn alot in your off riding time. Once you jump to a FI bike that knowledge just grows.

I don't have a problem starting up my carbed 600 after a few months of sitting. Granted on cold rides it likes to idle at about 2k, but it has never let me down, unlike the ever so often tweaks needed for a busa w PCMIII, TRE and all the other knick naks that occasionally glitch.
