Ok, lets say you are on a 2 lane one way rd. You are on the inside lane and there is a cage next to you on the outside lane. As you go into a curve, you realize that the curve is sharper than expected and you are going it too hot. What should you do? If you go wide, you will hit the car next to you.
Thx...

Focus on where I want to end up rather then where I think I'm going to end up and commit to the turn.

...praying might be a good idea too.
Lean more, pray to god.. and if you make it, pull your arse over. Clean your skivieis out, then kick yourself in the arse for riding too damn hot/fast.
What should you do?
1. Not street race cars on unfamiliar roads (or street race period :angry7:)
2. Realize that you should have known better than to rush a blind turn. If you don't know where the exit is, how can you set a high entry speed?
3. Brake hard before you start getting the bike leaned over and do what you can to set yourself up to turn hard and lengthen that curve while staying in your own lane.
4. Realize that if you can't take that turn on your bike at that speed, there is no way in hell the car is going to make it. Abandon the bike, jump on the car and surf it. It's gonna get ugly and you might as well have some fun before you go out.

I was thinking the exact same thing... if it's too hot for the bike, then there is no way that the car is going to make the turn, either!!!! Unless, the person on the bike has no idea what they are doing... in that case, then do:
Abandon the bike, jump on the car and surf it. It's gonna get ugly and you might as well have some fun before you go out.

keep the throttle steady, don't let off cuz that stands the bike up and go straight (into the path of the car)
LOOK WHERE YOU WANT TO GO! <<<<<--------very important.
add more countersteering to get the bike leaned over more.
do not apply brakes at all.

once you look off to the side for a split second....guess where you'll end up? OFF TO THE SIDE!!!! i can almost guarantee that will happen.
if you put yourself in that situation, it will most likely end up ugly. come do a trackday, and you'll learn how to properly execute a turn. coming in hot or running wide is a good way to put you on your ass especially if you don't know what to do when it happens.

Thx for the advice! I did find myself in this position :eek3:. It was a surprise for me because I have been on this road before (in my truck), and it was a u-turn under the freeway in Livingston. I thought the 2nd curve would be the same as the first (it was not) :banghead:. I was not racing the car and I was on the inside lane.
I am careful to ride within my limits (usually), and was really caught off-guard this time. Although I did not go down, I'm afraid it was either luck or divine intervention :angel10:. Cuz I don't think I did anything right. I reacted that is all. When I realized that I was in trouble, I hit the rear brake... bad idea. When I started to slide, all I remember seeing was the car... not a good place to look. I think I straightened up and added front brake. I somehow slowed enough to skim just behind it and end up on the shoulder. And I prayed ALOT!
What I now think I should've done:
1. kept my focus on where I wanted to be (not the car).
2. leaned into it
3. No brake!
4. No panic.
5. Not go in too fast to begin with!
BTW, I have taken MSF and have been riding almost daily since July of '05. Although only since Dec on the Katana. I love riding and appreciate the great advice & the humor!! :D

I disagree about the "no brakes" theory
Accelerating through a turn is done to settle the suspension to stop the bike from wallowing which changes your wheelbase & thus your turn radius...... ie helps you hold your line through the turn.
The same thing can be accomplished under deceleration as well........granted its a little harder to learn, so you should practice the skill looooong before you need it.
Grabbing brakes makes the bike want to stand up in the turn....the catch is you simply don't let it. Once you've tried it a few times you start to anticipate this and start adding more force to your bars to keep the bike turning. You combine a downshift with no throttle and a moderate drag of the brakes & you can make that turn.......but it takes practice & keeping your cool
*while its not exactly a skill for noobs, it has saved my life several times over the years*

MSF!
But, one line I remember Buck saying at my noob track day was that if you think you're too hot for a curve, try leaning the bike more and turning harder. It will turn incredibly well. It may scare you, but surprise you as well.
