View Full Version : Rossi crashes in Japan

Gauloises Yamaha Team rider Valentino Rossi suffered a rare fall in the Grand Prix of Japan today, after starting from eleventh on the grid and passing seven riders by the fourth lap. Seven laps later he came together with Marco Melandri as they pitched into the notorious turn ten and collided into the gravel, leaving Max Biaggi and Loris Capirossi clear at the front.

“We knew this would be a difficult race but the mechanics worked hard to improve the bike this morning in the warm-up and it worked well over the first few laps,” explains Rossi. “I was able to pass a lot of people but I started to have a few problems with the front tyre when I arrived behind the front three.”

“I knew it would be a risk to try and overtake and I expected Loris to pass Max in the final few laps. I knew I could be World Champion with fourth place and so I decided to just wait and do my race. Then Marco made a small mistake and suddenly I was behind him. It was the first time I had followed him into turn ten and we took completely different lines. He went to the outside of the track to cut across and get good acceleration out of the corner but I went to the inside to run wider on the exit.”

“For the first 50m of braking we were at exactly the same speed so there was no warning, but he was able to stop the bike much harder than me and I couldn’t avoid him. You can’t see it very well on the television but I wasn’t even trying to pass him, it was just one of those things. I apologised to Marco and he said ‘it happens.’ Now I am very concerned for him and I just hope he is ok.”

Gauloises Yamaha team director Davide Brivio added: “Our first concern is for Marco Melandri. We are not sure of his injuries just yet but we hope it is not serious and I wish him well on behalf of the whole team. There was a protest against Valentino put forward by Honda on behalf of all its MotoGP Teams, but Race Direction has judged this unfounded. As far as the championship is concerned, it is a pity we couldn’t finish it off here and for Valentino it is a shame that his run of podiums has been interrupted. All we can do is try to make up for it by taking the points back next time.”

I watched the race yesterday. Wow! Amazing stuff. To bad for Rossi and Melandri. From the video they where showing it definetly looked like Rossi made a booboo and should of given Melandri his wheel back for the turn in. Hopefully Melandri will be able to make the next race. :eh:

Well, in my opinion Rossi messed up there, too bad Melandri took the worst of it, he was holding one of his wrists. Rossi said he wasn't trying to pass him, but I saw that he tried one of his trademark agressive inside passes.

Loris rocked almost the whole race, Biaggi was doing great too, and it is just me, or he's a lot more humble than before (I used to hate him for just beign a snob).

And yeah, our boy Colin is third now, not bad!.

Melandri suffered a really bad foot injury... Rossi's footpeg went through Melandri's boot and gave him a very severe laceration on his right foot. Melandri might be done for the year.

Rossi is always fast, but dangerous when he is behind the leader pack. He will do anything and everything to get near the leaders, which sometimes causes him to make serious mistakes. When he is in front or #2, he is the jedi master with control and nailing remarkably consistent lap times.

However a desperate Rossi will often take too aggressive of a line with too much speed and just blow it, hasnt happened much this season because he has had a pretty easy time of it most of the season. Gibernau had been the only rider who could consistently take it to Vale, unfortunately Rossi has gotten into Sete's head since the first 2005 race at Jerez coupled with the hex Rossi put on him at Qatar last year saying Telefonica riders would never finish ahead of him again.

The thing that blew me away about Motegi is this...how the hell did Bridgestone own Michelin so badly, their tires have been subpar all season. Capirossi looked reborn out there, taking out Tamada at his home GP. If Bridgestone has made a breakthrough, could be an interesting finish to an otherwise yawner of a season.

i think Marco will be back hurt or not, too many other riders do it and Marco is in the chase for points and will not let it go over an injured foot,, IMO he'll be back on sunday.. he'll have the biggest boot in modern day racing, that foot will be wrapped up good and tight. :icon_thumright:

Great race by Capirossi. The man has been reborn with his new Bridgestone tires. No Hondas on the podium, awesome!
