Man the average citizen would never conceive how much of thier own tax money goes there. It's completely ridiculous if you ask me.

I would say it is all politics. Many Orthodox Rabbis are against the creation of Israel in accordance with Judaism/Old Testament. Not that they don't have a right to live there, but oppression is rampant. I don't think that being able to have everything practically free and to inculcate apartheid is under any religious pretext.
