View Full Version : Some 50 questions

Okay, just got my first 50. It's a 2002 XR50r. It looks sweet, and came with street tires(on it) and a free set of dirt tires as well. I haven't had much time to try it out yet because 1.) I just got it home and 2.) It's nasty as shit outside. But I did ride it around the block a couple times. Here are a few of my questions so far:
-First gear seems really short, almost too short. Do you guys wheelie in first, second, or third?
-It doesn't seem to have enough power to pull itself up on its own regardless of seat position, maybe I'm just not used to it or should there still be noticeable wheelie power?
-Also, I attempted to push it up with my feet in first from a stopped position and it gets up but then the power kinda drops for a second making it unable to keep it up. Normal?
-What are the very basics for learning to wheelie one of these things?
-What other mods should I look into doing immediately and which ones can I hold off on until I get better at riding it? It currently has street tired, upgrading CDI box and msd wires.

~Keith

I'm sure I'll have more questions so whatever I can't find on the boards I'll try to keep in this thread

they wheelie in both 1st and second...AND third...

bike doent have much power, you have to pull back a bit.

but it you want it to come up, rev the **** out of it in first, and pop it into 2nd REAL fast.....trust me, you will loop it... lol

The bike has a lag when you throttle it , so it's all about timing .I may not be a 50 vet, but since my first 50 i have spent hours and hours learning the bike . First gear to learn wheelies,2 gear for a noob not the greatest idea.
And i forgot the other questions you had ,sorry.

its not broke. when you first get it your like damn this shit has no power its impossible to wheelie. but you will soon learn the power band and how to wheelie it.

as far as learning to wheelie. put both feet down stretched out in front of you. give it gas and pull back on the handle bars using your feet as leverage. once its in the air let your feet slide along the ground. this will be hard at first. dont get frustrated if you can only go a foot or two at first. once you can ride the wheelie using just throttle with your feet dragging, start picking one foot up and then balancing from there. once youve mastered that put both feet up

BAD! NO NO!!!!

dont even think about getting rid of it already haha

but if you werent in fukking huntsville itd be great...

but as far as your questions...

i rock a 40 tooth rear sprocket, might be 41...either way, that helps out a WHOLE lot. you wouldnt think it would on a 50, but it barely takes anything to lift it up. i dont think that one had big bars on it, thats definitely something you MUST HAVE! BBR sells theres for 200, for the complete kit, and i think "bagwell" is selling a red baron bar kit for a decent price, but either way you need a bar kit.

Thanks for the advice :notworthy:

If I leave the stock bars on there for the moment to practice I could obviously ruin them, but would it hurt anything else on the bike to practice with them? I'll check into getting a larger sprocket asap, will I need a new chain with more teeth(not sure what the stock tooth setup is).

Another question I wanted to throw out there. How hard should they be to shit? I had soft shoes on and it was actually hurting my foot to shit it until I started using the middle of my foot.

its probably because that stock shifter sucks. I just took mine off and replaced it with something similar to this.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300054921251&ih=020&category=35580

The extra 1 or 2 inch extension really helps. Its easier to shift and it really helps for an adult foot! And if you get one make sure it the folding tip, not necessary but it doesnt get caught it the grass and bend when you drop it.

Awesome, was hoping there was some kind of fix for that. Here is my Ebay list so far:

The first two, if they are decent quality(I will wait for someone's opinion) I'll go ahead and grab tomorrow. The bar kit I'll have to wait on a bit.

your shift rod is prolly bent should be real easy to shift with the stock clutch.

barkit is more important than springs and sprocket it should be your first investment then a rear spring and street tires. the fronts springs .then if you want a sprocket go for it. uni filters gutting the spark arrestor will give it a lil more power.

I ride a stock phifty, the only upgrade to it was the uni air filter I added when I bought the bike. I haven't changed the sprockets any since I bought the thing. Like they said at first it is hard to get it to come up. I have a bigger phifty that helped me learn to bounce the front end and chop the throttle to get the bike to come up. Then I started to learn on the smaller phifty. The big bar kit will help out a lot, but I did manage to learn to do sit downs and staggers on a stock set. I might be changing out one of the needles in the carbs. A buddy of mine was saying that it would help out the lag in the motor. I would just say coming from another noob it takes time but once you get it your going to be hooked on it. I actually be ignoring my big bike and riding the phifty when it isn't freezing or raining.

adjusting the idle-air screw will tune the carb, and smooth out any laggs, or stumble, from zero-1/4 turn of the throttle, the needle is for 1/4-3/4 throttle only.

Ok josh might have you help me out if you don't mind? I am going to see if my friend over on my side of town could help me with it but if not do you mind helping me out? I want to fix the lag just I am no good with carbs.

My pennies, for what they're worth, when learning to wheelie it, start in first, from a standstill, with your feet on the ground.

Throttle it up to balance point and then drag your feet on the ground to help balance. I did this and could ride out first gear wheelies all the way across the lot after about 15 minutes.

It will eat up your shoes like a meat grinder, so get some shifer shoes and duct tape the toes.

I only got to play on the 50 a little, but I was getting close to bringing one foot up to the pegs pretty fast - wouldn't have taken much more practice to get both feet up.

This 50 had big bars and I believe -1 front sprocket.

i tried that with Mala's 50, it didn't work with me... i strated with staggered wheelies, i knew to cover the brake and staggered made the front wheel come up MUCH easier

You have rear pegs?

If I'd had rear pegs, I would have tried stand-ups, I think. It felt like BP was hard to get when seated, stand up would have been much better, but I had no rear pegs and you can't stand up on the stockers (as far as I know)

I found dragging my feet to be a really easy method to learn 'em.

yeah, i have rear pegs. you should get some, they are cheap... i have a friend that bought bicycle pegs, drilled out the middle so the axle would fit through, cut them on an angle and then done... cheap pegs, i couldn't image ones made for a stunt 50 are expensive though
