I was looking inot getting my crf 50 strret legal and was looking at the Texas transportation code. the first thing i saw was this...
TRC §502.404.
OPERATION OF VEHICLE WITHOUT LICENSE PLATE OR REGISTRATION INSIGNIA.
* * * * *
(c) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway during a registration period a road tractor, motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer that does not display a license plate, attached to the rear of the vehicle, that has been:
(1) assigned by the department for the period; or
(2) validated by a registration insignia issued by the department that establishes that the vehicle is registered for the period.
it says nothing in that about a "motor-driven cycle" which is decribed here...
TRC §541.201.
VEHICLES.
In this subtitle:
(10) "Motor-driven cycle" means a motorcycle equipped with a motor that has an engine piston displacement of 250 cubic centimeters or less.
so that says that i do not need a license plate or registration.... am i reading this right? it does say in other parts that i need a headlight, tail light, and brake light. I'm looking for inspection info and insurance requirements.

it says nothing of an inspection sticker for a "motor-driven cycle" either...
ATTACHMENT OR PRODUCTION OF INSPECTION CERTIFICATE.
(a) An inspection certificate shall be attached to or produced for a vehicle in the manner required by department rule.
(b) The department shall:
(1) require that a certificate for a motorcycle be attached to the rear of the motorcycle near the license plate; and
(2) adopt rules with respect to display of an inspection certificate for a moped.

they discuss motorcycles and mopeds, but it is VERY grey as far as motor-driven cycles go. i think i'll just put a red blinky light with a reflector on the back and a little light for the front for night time use and be good... but i'll carry a copy of the actual law in a ziplock bag under the seat of the 50

it may mean the bicycles with the wind up motor? i dunno but i doubt if a cop pulls you over he would know this law, so most likely you would get a ticket imho but then could fight it in court

that's what i'm going to do. if the cop sees me on the street, i'll be acting responsible... and then they won't know what to cite me for since everything they could cite me for i have printed out to show them. only one way to find out... :keke:

Dude, you're going to get your shit impounded like that. Every cop I have ever talked to or "encountered" tried to, or threatened to ticket me for any and everything he could and impound the bike (250cc and 80cc dirtbikes and 50cc quad) If you walk it across a road it's all good, but they catch you on it....well, good luck with that.

true... and after reading through it a few times, i guess it could be interpreted different ways... in the first post i have this"(10) "Motor-driven cycle" means a motorcycle... "
and then in post #3 it says... "(1) require that a certificate for a motorcycle be attached to the rear of the motorcycle near the license plate"
damn... oh well, i'll get the tags

My buddy in Austin rides a bicycle with a 50cc motor on it. It can be pedaled or driven by the motor and he does not require tags, lights, or registration. He actually said the motor had to be somewhat smaller than the 50cc that it actually is, but I don't remember how small he said it had to be. It has a 49cc badge on the motor, so I guess just less than 50cc.
It's really more of a bicycle though, and it hauls arse.
edit -- he rides it on the street as well as in the bike lanes -as do lots of other hippies - and he's never heard of anyone being hassled for it.
I'll try and get the link from him.

this link will tell you what you want http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb/pages/Electric.htm
remember countys, citys and such can pass a local law to take presidence over the current law. My neighbor hood and county has no such law, but trust me the cops dont believe it and it will be well worth your time(time you will spend in court) to go ahead and get it legal. I spent many days in court because I went against the grain.
remember you are riding a "motor assisted scooter"
