This is the first time I've recieved one since graduating. I no longer qualify for any of the exemptions since I'm not a student, but upon closer inspection I saw the following list. Each has a check box next to it.

To serve as a juror you must meet qualifications. You must:

1. be 18 years of age
2. be a resident of Harris County
3. be a U.S. citizen and eligible to register to vote in Harris County
4. be of sound mind and good moral character

Then below it states "I do hereby certify under penalty of perjury that I am
___Exempt because of the reason checked above
___Disqualified because of the reason checked above.

So, has anyone ever checked number 4 to indicate that he or she is not of sound mind or good moral character? Is this something that would require some kind of paperwork to prove insanity or loose morals? :D I'm just, you know, curious.

When you are supposed to appear? I'm called in for January 11th to the courthouse on Congress Ave. It'd be great if we could ride in together. Then I could run in and loudly proclaim the fact that I rode together with my friend, the policeman. :keke: I'm guessing that coupled with my degree in rhetoric would get me out of there quick. :D

Some of these questions are. . .odd. For instance, "Have you ever sustained any accidental bodily injury requiring medical attention?" wth? Then there's a tiny little box asking "If yes, what type?"

Your answer, Multiple accidental self inflicted stab wounds to the thigh.

Then then you could claim disqualified under number 4.

I love how people live in this great country and claim all these rights but when it comes time to serve and help somebody else they say it's not worth their time or lie and generally don't care. I hope when you're facing some jail time the people that serve on your jury have the same attitude as you. Just don't care.

AMEN!!! How about you just go and do your CIVIC DUTY. Last one I got turned into a three week trial over a baby shaking case in Friendswood. We became the first sequestered jury in Galveston Co in twenty years. It is your duty as an American citizen to do your part. How would you feel if you were the accused and all of your "peers" (the ones who might understand your stance) all flaked out. Grow up and be a part of your community. Who knows...it might be really interesting and you write a book and become rich and famous. Could happen.

not a good idea to check this box unless it is true. it will become part of your perm record!

It appears I've been set down but good by the self-proclaimed Licensed Finger Pointer and Smack Master. Hopefully, I can assuage your offended principles if I let go of the joke and reveal that I wholeheartedly agree with you. I've never noticed the "of sound mind and moral character" qualification before and simply thought it funny. Neither of you know me, so I suppose it's possible to take the banter seriously and believe I'd actually go into a courthouse and say crazy things to get out of jury duty; I guess there are some who actually do it, but I'm not one of them. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who's willing to do it is best culled from the group anyway.

I hope when you're facing some jail time the people that serve on your jury have the same attitude as you.

You know, if I ever find myself in that situation, I sincerely hope you're right.

 I'd need to check the Master List of certified sane and moral before I could make the claim. I think I'm safe by U.S. standards, but I'm betting there are other cultures that would absolutely label me immoral and madder than a hatter. :D

I've gotten tons of jury letters. Now that my kids are past the age of needing constant supervision, I have no excuse not to serve. I always thought it would be fun, though. Anyway... I have never actually gone, because there is a numer to call before you actually make the drive, and it's always been cancelled.

Here is an interesting tid bit on one of the many reasons for which you can be struck once you are down there from TXJUR CRIMLAW § 3133 (internal citations omitted):

A prospective juror may be challenged for cause by either party on the ground that the juror has such a mental defect or disease as to render him or her unfit for jury service.
Illustration: Although low intelligence is not necessarily a ground for challenge for cause to a venireperson under the statute, a venireperson must be able to comprehend the limited function of a juror. Similarly, a venireperson so traumatized by the experience of being called to jury duty that he or she is visibly shaking may properly be struck for cause. A challenge for cause based on mental defect may also be upheld where the prospective juror vacillates in answers to voir dire questions and wavers between wanting to sit on the jury and not wanting to participate or is unable to fully and fairly perform a juror's functions due to Alzheimer's disease.

If I wanted to duck out, I don’t think 3133 will help me:

I suspect this vernireman (screw neuter P.C. speak—let’s use the pure language :D) can scrabble together the means to comprehend the limited functions of a juror

The only reason I’d suffer the shakes is due to excess caffeine

I don’t waffle

Truly, I ain’t old enough for Alzheimer's

Thank you for your most solicitous input. :keke:

Oh Pester, Pester. . . :banghead: I'm glad Squoddybody mentioned that bit of info because it certainly doesn't make sense to drive all the way to the courthouse without calling if there's a possibility that the court day may be cancelled, right?

Sigh. I was simply intrigued and tickled by a government form asking citizens to do a sanity/morality self-check. That's all. Honest. I didn't s.p.e.l.l. it out in the first post, and apparently, it was too tongue in cheek for some folks. My bad. Jokes started rolling about exaggerated attempts to get out of jury duty; I was amused, and here we are. Do I want to go serve jury duty? Let's just say it wasn't on my Christmas list to Santa. :D But then, I don't want to pay taxes, vote when no official I really support is on the ballot, or sit around in the DMV half the day in order to keep things legal either, but I do. Tis, as so many have pointed out, civic duty, not civic fun. Any of you who deal with the public: cops, medical professionals, teachers, service-workers, morticians, etc. should understand that it is, in fact, quite possible to poke fun at a thing while still treating it with gravity and respect.

Lame

At what point in Mala's first post did she said "F**K THE SYSTEM" and ask the many way to get out of her duty.

Maybe she wanted out, maybe not. But she was inquiring about the question of "sound mind."

Granted some of you understood that, others didn't. :banghead:
