looking at getting some new gear, leather jacket for winter and possibly a new helmet...
how are the icon helmets? I like the design but how is airflow and comfort?
why are icon jackets so much compared to others?

their products are not top notch.....their designs and trend is what sells. a few of my friends have icon helmets, they look cool, but that's about it. i'm not sure if i would trust my noggin in one.

Icon in my experience is junk. Looks good.... but is just plain old junk.
Go with quality gear such as Arai, Shoie, Suomy. As far as jackets and glove go A*, Dianese, Fieldsheer, Vanson and the likes. Maybe not as fashionable but your road rash b/c of bad gear isn't very either...then again chicks dig scares.

Im wearing an icon jacket while im sitting in the library here. It has a textile body and leather sleeves. I would compare its quality and crash protection to my joe rocket mesh(just guessing, havnt tested them yet). If you dig the style, and thats what will actually get you to wear your jacket everyday, then more power to you. I just think you can find better jackets, that look just as sharp for around the same price or cheaper (patrick at MU FTW!)
As for their lids, JUNK. Ive been down in one at around 45mph. Didnt take too much of a beating, so I cant attest too much to crash protection, but they are just poor quality. The foam degrades quickly and REALLY affects the fit. And pieces tear and rip.
Oh, and their face shield mounting components are crap. I went through 3 sets of baseplates on mine before it got put on the shelf and a scraped lid.
just my .02, but i think there are way better products for the $$$.

I bought my nephew a new Icon Domain Decay helmet and the middle vent blew off on the first ride! I bought it online on sale but the helmet retails for around $390 at the shops. Luckily the retailer sent us a new one!

damn, sorry to hear that. lucky they did send you a new one....most places will just tell you to fck off.
thats why i buy everything from Motorcycles Unlimited, local, good people, and they do whatever they can to make you happy. plus their prices are VERY comparible to online deals.

Not a big fan of icon either.
Granted, their quality has improved somewhat over the past few years, but you can find much better for less.
If you have time, come by and I can show you some options.

I bought an Icon Mainframe helmet and gave it as a gift. I don't think it lasted two months before it started to fall apart. Talk about a shitty present.

only thing i've bought from icon are my street boots, and those i bought mostly for the style. they've held up well enough, but i've only had them for 2 months. haven't seen anything else of theirs that i'd buy though.

I wear an Icon leather jacket and boots. Went down wearing both and they held up incredibly well....as for their helmets though...from what I've seen your almost safer wearing a bicycle helmet....things tend to come off and break extra easy.....makes me nervous.
what about their gloves are they any better or what?

I also have the first gen. ICON Timax Titanium gloves. They last 4 years before the left hand glove started ripping apart (due to the clutch use??), I think if I have take care of the leather, it will still be good, the quality at least of these gloves is very good. The jackets look nice but I think they are over priced. My favorite brand is Alpinestarts and is my only brand gear for everything. Good quality an affordable.

i'm gonna get flamed here, but from working in the e.r. and working ems,it doesn't matter what brand you have on,as long as you have something on!!! i don't think it will be much difference if you have a shoei on or a walmart special. now i plan on buying the icon tough luck helmet(the one with the red 13 on each side)next month. it's a domain model with a rubber like finish. i own a first gen icon timax and love it compared to my joe rocket, which makes me feel like a freakin linebacker!!! i have a theory. if cool looking gear gets you to wear gear,i'm down with that. better than trying to look cool with no gear. imo icon is allright by me. my kbc dark zombie is another story :angry7:

You should look into the Scorpion Helmets! they compare in quality to top brands like Aria and Shoei and they retail for half the price! Not to mention they have some sweet designs!!!
as far as gloves, I would look at the AlpineStars, I just got me a pair of the octanes, and man, i can totally tell a big difference in quality from my old joe rockets that started ripping after 6 months of use! :angry7:
jackets i dont have much experience with ... still riding around in my joe rocket mesh, which is still holding up ok. but im in the market for an alpinestars leather now for the winter

I have Icon boots. 2 years and holding up well. They will be replaced soon, but are still in good condition (other than they are not white anymore). Have never been down in them, but so far 11000 miles of riding and countless hours of hanging out in them and not a stitch, loose thread, broken clasp, nothing.
Cannot say too much about their other stuff as I have had no experience with it.

But I must admit I really like the HJC AC-12 Carbon, I would actually purchase it. I also like the graphics on Icons "death from above" scheme...but I wouldn't buy it.
