get a good helmet the first time!!!!!! The X11 should make you happy, just make sure it fit's properly and you'll be good to go.

Don't cheap out when it comes to helmets or there might not be a later.
That being said, there are cheaper ones out there that provide simular if not better protection, but what your paying for is comfort, fit, and finish. Go to a few shops and try on the different brands, you might find something else that fits your head and your budget better.
Ok thats what i thought but some people told me to get a cheap helmet at first then upgrade as you get more serious but i think im going to get the X Eleven. Plus my parents didnt want me to spend more than i have to and get the same protection.

The helmets all have to pass the same standards and the idea that expensive equals better is a myth (within certain boundaries). Unless you are talking about a $49 helmet the main thing you pay for is the name, fit, graphics, venting types and comfort.
Find a name brand helmet that looks good and fits right and you will be fine.
Sport Rider magazine did a big article last year and the helmets they picked as best choice were ZR1. They are fairly inexpensive but provided as much safety based on their tests as even the most expensive on the market.
I have a KBC VR1 and am very happy with it.

it was actually motorcyclist mag. and it so happens the SOLE dist. and largest advertiser for motorcyclist mag. was also Parts Unlimited, coincidence.
here's my analogy, if you HAD to be in an accident, would you rather be in a Volvo or a DAEWOO?

try on everything and get the one that fits YOUR head the best. the interiors are shaped different for the variety of head shapes. then choose the color you want. That being said...I have an x-11. my head actually gets cold because it flows so much air. My kbc never moved any air and I was always hot in it.

I LOVE my X-11. Fit's my head PERFECTLY and I feel safe in it. Try on some other high end helmets though. They're all made for differnt head shapes.

I agree with the others. Buy the best helmet you can afford. Be sure to check for proper venting as well as the protection. You will need it on hot Houston days! The vents on some of the cheaper helmets are gimmicks. All show and no flow!

no difference at all. the differences are weight, comfort, and ventilation. all SNELL and DOT helmets will protect your head equally. it's the added performance features that makes one helmet better than the other.

Any experience with the RF-1000? Are they comparable with regards to noise level?
I thought my RF was pretty quiet, but if the X-11 and RF are the same then I need to try some helmets that are really quiet!

more quiet = less ventilation

i wouldn't really say that... my KBC has shit for ventilation and is louder than my rf-800 with more ventilation. i had an arai, don't remember the model, but it was quieter than the rf800 and had even better ventilation... that has been the quietest helmet i have worn so far, but i'll be getting an rf1000 in a week. quiet seems to be more so about how it fits around the neck and under the ears

I have some bigass ears, so my X-11 isn't TOO bad. Would be if they were smaller though, as the helmet flows a damn good amount of air.

I loved my X-11 and it saved my head at 90 mph. I currently have an Arai and it fits slightly but I think I will switch back to Shoei because of the increase in windnoise with the Arai.
