ambulance's are a waist of money, if your not in a serious situation, I wouldnt call them. My first wreck they asked me if they needed an ambulance and i said "NO!" I used there cell phone and called my brother and got there quick.

and you know your not in serious situations HOW? are you medically trained?
had a friend of mine crash at the dirt track, went home, as he was fainting called 911.......rushed him to the hospital to remove his spleen......he felt fine, until that point.
better safe then sorry. that why you should have medical ins. if you ride motorcycles. along w/ life insurance.

when you crash, you are still filled with adrenaline, and you just can't think straight. Too easy to overlook an injury.

Yeah, luckily my girlfriend lives in the same neighborhood as me and took me to the hospital when I had my accident. Not that it made much difference, my hospital bills are already well over $25K anyways with more to come.

we had a friend that had an accident at the lake and they charged him 1200.00 for the ambulance 18,000.00 for life flight and well over 80,000.00 for other fees and you know what was wrong? He had a dislocated hip. He said while he was lying on the beach in pain all that was going through his mind was all the beaver shots he was getting now that's priceless.

The really sad thing is that the doctors have to charge so much because of malpractice lawsuits and insurance companies negotiating down payments.
Oh, and thank God for the beaver!

My life flight in March was 9800.00 before insurance and all of the stuff they did at the hospital was over 6000.00. All that was wrong was post concussive syndrome (I couldn't and still cant remember the wreck) and a small scratch on my knee. But I am still happy they were safe rather than sorry cause of the head trauma. If no head trauma and just something like a broke leg happens Ill limp to the hospital next time.:laughing6

the only thing good about the ambulance is that you get seen quicker.
I was told 2-3 hours twice at the ER. So I just scheduled the next day with my orthopedic surgeon, went home, and self medicated myself.
sorry to hear about your first bill...i need to dig up the end total from my surgeries...

you would be surprised. Sometimes medical bills show what is would be if you did not have insurance and what your insurance got charged. And majority of the time they charge your insurance company almost double what they would be charging you out of your pocket.

My buddie crashed his quad real bad out in the desert back in phoenix...A med-vac flew in, and as they were strapping him in he was concious enough to tell them he didn't have insurance...The took his ass off the strecher and laid him on the ground with us(we said we'd have somone with a truck meet us out there) and packed their sh*t flew off! I couldnt belive it!!

There is a lot more to that story if it is remotely true. My bet is if he said that, they asked if he wanted to go to the hospital in the helicopter, and if he was mentally able, they let him make that decision. Even a shitty medic wouldn't jeopardize their certifications for someone like that, let alone a whole crew on a medivac.
the only thing good about the ambulance is that you get seen quicker.
Another common misconception. If you are not triaged to as a more serious patient, they'll let you sit in the waiting room just like a person who came in their personal vehicles. ESPECIALLY at Ben Taub and most other Houston hospitals.
Emergency rooms are bound by certain rules, and similarly, they base who gets seen first not by who arrives first or by what mode of transportation, but by who is more seriously medically in need.
Don't ever think that just because you go by ambulance that you will be seen sooner. You'll sit for just as many hours as someone who goes by their car.

Life Flight is a serious money making business! Helicopter companies compete heavily for area representation and evacuation calls. Year ago, Petroleum Helicopters Inc got into the rat race of Life Flight and the starting salary was $100K for a freshman pilot!
The basic evac costs $10K. Anything over 25 miles adds another $5K. If there is a LZ covered by poles, wires, trees or anything that the pilot can deem a flight hazard, we would check that box on the report costing you usually another $5K for the extra risk. We were told in most situations to check it and write in there were vehicles in the vacinity immobile causing added risk. LOL!!
You also have to see it from the flight side of the coin. A BK117 costs $1500/hour to operate. That is just flight costs... not what the pilot, EMTs or flight surgeon is getting paid. If you call in LF Houston, you can bet that bird is going to be tied up for at least two hours. It takes 5-10 minutes to get her in the air, 10-15 to respond to the location, 2-5 to argue with the idiot cop on the ground that you can really put the heli on the street so the EMTs don't have to walk so far... but he needs to move his car that he has been directing traffic around. Then you have 5 minutes to the Hospital and a 10 minute flight idle to finish paperwork there... then another 15-20 back to base.
Add it up... you might as well know how your dollars are spent by the insurance company.
wow for that kinda money i want strippers and gambling
just leave me laying there if it happens to me
When I got life lined from racers road my bill was $10,880.00 They charged me $350.00 for oxygen that I didn't use, and $6500.00 for fuel...For the orthopedic doctor insurting the rod in my leg was $3,700.00, plastic doctor to reconstruct my leg $18,500, Herman Memorial bill $125,490.00, lesson I learned about doing triple digits on a public road - PRICE LESS!!!!
The accident happened 9/4/06. My broken leg will just now be healed up in about 5 - 8 more weeks....I would have been healed up by now but the rod in my leg caused me to have an infection...Therefore they had to remove the infected rod ( another surgery $6,780.00 ) and put a new rod in my leg...
Thank God I still got my leg, when I first got to the hospital my leg was SO bad they were thinking about ampuetaing it from the knee down....

BigC, that is a lot of money. Do you owe that or insurance paying all of that? Just wondering, IF you do owe that, do you think that you would give up your leg for a fraction of that cost?
you outta see how much life flight is.
Life flight from Conroe Regional med. center to UTMB Galveston.
Less than 30min ride cost $16,000 and change. My 3 year son was the patient.
Reason for life flight? They did not want to be caught in houston traffic on the ambulance all the way to Galveston. I love my son to death and he is worth every dim of it. But still a little over priced I think. I think it could have been dealed with differently.

With all this in mind I must say try to avoid being taken to Cy-Fair Medical Center ER if you can.
My experiences relate from car crashes I've been in to friends being beaten with crow bars and I have yet to have a good experience with their ER.
Nothing says "we care about our patients" like falling over into the Dr. and unable to walk straight from head trauma to being sent out on your way back home without being diagnosed or treated with anything but some pain killers.

Wow, and I thought it was only one case.
A friend of mine had a severe stomach ache, went to Cy-fair and was sent home with pain killers. She was transported that night because she quit breathing. They did a catscan and found that her colon busted and she went into toxic shock. She was in a koma for a week. RIP Sherry.

Last July I was life flighted from Leakey Tx to University Hospital in San Antonio and it cost me $11,325 and the ambulance people just showed up and stabilized me and then loaded me into the chopper and they charged me $680. Followed by the $36,000 in hospital bills. Not to mention Broken shoulder, broken tailbone, Shattered right ankle and 2 pins and 6 screw in my ankle.

My T7 get-off at MSR Houston 2/25/07 fortunately did not result in bad injuries, however until the x-ray it was unknown what or if anything had been broken or torn up internally in my left hand. X-rays were negative for fractures. They gave me 2 different kind of pain pills and a script for more. No ambulance ride - the red dually with gixxerbill at the wheel (prolly scarrier than an ambulance - eh?). The total bill from the hosital/doctor/xray/etc. in Angleton was right at or slightly under $1000. I thought it was a bargain. They even gave me an extra fancy ice pack for my hand - to take home with me. I was VERY pleased with the quality of service - it was a little slow, but not bad all things considered. I'd go again in a heartbeat if I needed medical attention while at MSR.

surprisingly, Henderson Memorial was the best hospital I have ever been to. It was a small rinky dink place, probably orginally built in someones garage, but the people there were fantastic. There were only 2-3 people in the ER the whole day. Needless to say I got excellent attention, without ever having to wait on anything. I have been in ER's all over the country, and this was by far the best.

x rays in 5 minutes, sent to surgery after 5 minutes, and finished surgery after an hour
then 2 days later was kicked out and sent home of course lol
no complaints, and uh yeah total bill was 32,000, and some pennies lol
