What bikes are you guys with mini-motos using?
I think it would be fun to have a one and run it on a mini track
If you were going to do a mini-moto, what would you use?
and if it matters I'm pretty heavy, 6'3" 215lbs

well it depends on if your trying to just have fun or run a specific class. TMGP has different classes with different requirements. I see alot of 80 CC dirt bikes, especially the KX80. Some of the best examples i have seen were the 80's actually

man, this bike is beggin for it: $750 http://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/372737600.html
http://images.craigslist.org/01010901020201030420070712d54b0d5d6c45fc7b0f004f8d eleted
but the common bikes are the kx/rm 60/65s, klx110s and the xr100s. really depends on the class you want to get into.

probably not racing in any class, mostly just having fun
but lets say I do want to eventually be competetive, what are the classes, and criteria? which ones are the tougher class to run in [I want the easy one]
where do I find this info?

Or get the bike now and goof around on it. I haven't put the street tires on yet because riding it with the knobbies through mud is sooo much fun.

I've been lurking on some other sites
there are some guys putting 12" wheels on xr100s
is that a common thing to do? and is it benifitial?
the stock size wheel is 17" right? I would think there are more tire options for that size
the more I read about it the more I'm really jones'n to get on one

I don't have the "official" calendar in front of me (and I'm too lazy to look) but I have 8/11 penciled in on my work calendar as a TMGP race day in Katy. Might be a good opportunity to head over, talk to folks, look at bikes, etc.

that is a good idea, I'm gonna make plans to watch. they don't charge spectators do they?

stock xr100 is 19" in front, and 16" in rear.
i run a crf100 (basically a newer xr100), 12" tires are good for small tight tracks, 17" have lots more tire choices, and can work for big tracks as well.
i am currently running 17" wheels, because i plan to run the big tracks as well.
be ready to start spending some money in this....because it's a mini-bike....doesn't mean you'll spend less money. believe me. that's what i thought. i think i've spent about well over $2,500 (after the price of the bike). so make sure you can afford to spend before you jump in. or take a ride on someone else's first, and make sure you will enjoy it.

i spent $850ish total (buying the bike and modding it) on mine...it's fast too!

I was just kidding about taking the sv out there
I'm deffinately gonna try and do a "budget build up"
I'm not married to the xr100, it just seem like it would be a good fit for me, given my height and weight, and I think I personally would prefer 4stroke over 2 stroke
I'd start by just doing wheels and tires, I don't have any delusions of getting out there and being a "rookie sensation"

that's like me...got the bike for cheap off some kid. bought 2 12" tires. bought one pair of wheels on ebay. ripped the front hub out and put it in the rear rim. mounted tires. then i went racing!

can you buy 12" or 17" wheels?
or do you have to peice them together like you did?
and this feels like a dumb question, but spoke wheels require tubed tires correct?

you can buy 12" or 17" wheels.....depends on what will better fit your needs. 12" wheels on a xr100 would look a little silly if you ask me.
and you would have to lace and true the spokes to the wheels/hubs (or you can buy them preassembled, which is around $800 a set) and if you wanted to go with slicks, they are around $250-$300
and yes, spoke wheels require a tube.
i am almost your weight, and the xr100 suspension is shhhhhhitty. bouncy bouncy bouncy. i'm not a big fan of drum brakes either. some people do alright with it.
most of my money spent on the crf/xr100 was spent on suspension/brakes. if you end up getting a crf/xr100, let me know, i can help with the little knowledge i do have with this bike.

very cool
what upgrades did you do to the breaks and suspension? how much did either cost?
since you would have to rehub them anyway, could you just put a 16" rim with your front hub and have matching 16" wheels? or are there not enough tire options to make this a good idea?
I know I'm asking a lot of wuestions, and I'm still 6 - 8 months vefore even starting this, but I'd like to know what I'm looking at before I start.
are there other small bikes that would be a better starting platform brakes/suspesion wise?
or is the cost difference between the xr and a "better equiped" bike more than you would spend upgrading those?

We found a 16" wheel on eBay for like a 100 bucks for Skid's bike. I still need one more though. I originally wanted to just leave the 19s on for now in the front but after riding some figure eights like that, I think I am seriously going for 16" as well now.

now would having 16" instead of 17" give a "gearing" advantage? would it give you a little more aceleration but a little less top end, like having a different sized sproket

']now would having 16" instead of 17" give a "gearing" advantage?
no...
not only that but:
1. 16" tirewidths are disproportionate (overkill) - they're too wide and don't have enough sidewall
2. (to my knowledge) you can't find race rubber in that size - if you're looking to be competitive i'd recommend going with 17" gp rims...
