or don't paint the helmet. can possibly ruin the integrity of it......if you're gonna paint a helmet....might as well get a cheaper one.

House you know more about paint than I do but...
I don't think that typical automotive paint will hurt a helmet depending on the material of the shell.
I used to hear that about polycarbonate shells but I think Shoie's are composite. I know a guy whose father makes a nice retirement supplement painting helmets for SCCA drivers. And you also see custom paint on the big shot racers. So I kinda think it might be OK.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

They paint helmets all the time with no problems. How do you think the professional racers get theirs in team color schemes. Typical repair grade paint usually is not used and usually they are airbrushed so the buildup is less.

I like the first pic. I think it'd be cool. But you should get a black or dark blue helmet and have them paint him in it or else it's gonna be hard to accentuate the sparkles that mark the frame of the surfer's body. If you get a silver helmet, that means you will have to choose white or a different shade of silver to paint him and his board.. and I don't think it'll look as good.

Get that helmet and I will buy a Fantastic Four one and we can fight.

i'm not saying it may or may not be good to do so. but i do know, in order to paint the helmet, you must sand away at the helmet to get it smooth and flat before you can lay the paint down.

i'm not sure if sanding at the helmet will ruin the integrity of the actual helmet, but i wouldn't risk my noggin to find out.

i don't know....but i think they have a contract with the helmet company and they get a custom helmet for sponsorship. i could be wrong though. :dontknow:

i'm not sure who gave you a lesson on paints....but airbrush paint is made up of the same chemicals, in smaller containers. and if someone were to repaint a whole helmet....i don't see how an airbrush gun will have less buildup, it will require the same amount for even coverage. an airbrush gun will just take longer to cover.

i'm not trying to call nobody out or anything, just stating the facts, and some of my opinions.

It's true that the paint is the same - but it is often reduced more than full coats. The detail work (AB) goes on with MUCH less build-up, but there is still a primer/base coat, multiple (single coat) layers of intercoat clear between colors to avoid lifting, and of course the final UV clear which is probably the highest build layer. Overall, I'd say there's the same or similar build on airbrush work as full color sprays.

(I've been able to do helmets with barely an ounce or two of paint for all the details. It actually works best to avoid the build-up, since you're cutting multiple stencils and masking, and you don't want ridges and edges between areas - that's when color sanding the clear can make or break the work.)
