it's the bomb! lots of trails - some short some long. google trail riders of houston, they have maps on their website. always call before you haul (sorry don't have the number handy)

take a buddy with you - walking out of that place is not fun. most of the trails loop back to the trail head (parking area) they have short loops which range from about 10 miles to longer ones that are up to 30 miles.

plan on a wide range of terrain from deep sand, there are many roots that like to destroy tires, creek crossings (most are bridged) and it's not uncommon to have a tree or two laying across the trail. it'll make you real tuff fo sho!

it's a blast - have fun and take a buddy

oh yeah - when it's open, it's open 24 hours a day. when you're up for a real challange throw some lights on your bike and do a night ride. AWESOME!

riding the forest on mini's is awesome. . .call this number to check and see if the trails are open or not 936-344-6205. They close depending on the weather to prevent erosion. Bring a buddy, a cell phone, and a good sense of direction, the trail system is huge. We always get on the trails at Kelly's Pond Recreational area if that helps at all.

Best way to print maps full page is with Word..

Set margins to maximum.
/File/Page Setup
Set all margins to zero.
When you click OK an error message will tell you "can't do that".
Click Fix.
This will set the maximum margins size for your printer.

Insert the bitmap.
/Insert/Picture/From File
When the file loads click on it.
With the mouse drag the lower right corner to the maximum page size.
DO NOT drag the sides. That will skew the map.

I stole this from another source too:

Usually after several days of rain they will close the trails to protect them from getting torn up so you may want to call and confirm if they are open before you make the trip, that is if trail riding is what you want. SHNF 936-344-6205 option 2.

Bikes used on the trails do not have to be street legal, but they do need a spark arrestor, and the rider is required to wear a helment. Bikes that are ridden on the forrest dirt roads have to meet the same requirements as the street. The Forrest LEO's do enforce this. All of the rules are posted at the designated parking areas.

Night runs in the forest on unfamiliar trails is probably not a good idea. There is a lot of treacherous stuff out there.

+1

For the advanced rider looking for a new challange it is a blast and very different from day riding.

Watch out for Sasquatch!

BTW, you do not need a sticker. The sticker is something they are doing to help finance future trails. All you pay is $5 per day (leave the money in a drop box and keep your receipt).

I've never seen a park ranger when I've been there, but I've been told that they are very strict in enforcing the safety gear and spark arrestors.

Like others have said, they close the trails after any significant rain. This summer has been real bad, so don't expect to ride there anytime soon.

call the number i posted, it will give you trail conditions. with the weather we've had lately, those trails will be closed a while. You can camp overnight at Kelly's Pond Recreation Area. . .maybe an idea for those of you who want to ride day and night!?!?

I ride out there all the time, as does KSTRS on this forum. They shut the trails down after rain and they stay closed till its deemed dry. Call 888-361-6908 opt. 2 for status. Kellys Pond on the west side is the only trailhead you can camp at, and I would get a spark arrestor if you plan on riding alot or on weekends.

I’m trying not to play the heavy-handed bureaucrat here, but I want to put the facts out so that the real requirements of the Texas OHV program are known. I don’t anyone to be issued a citation because they were unaware of the requirements of the Texas OHV program.

To ride at any of the OHV venues in Texas located on any city, county, state or federal lands, where OHV is legal, you must have a current Texas OHV decal properly mounted on your trail machine or you risk getting a citation. This includes the Sam Houston National Forest.

It's not up to the USFS to say you don't need the Texas OHV decal to ride in the Sam Houston NF. This requirement comes from Texas State Law, specifically chapter 29 of the Parks & Wildlife Code.

This law was passed in the 79th Legislature, in the spring of 2005 as House Bill 1311. It became law on 1 September, 2005, the law became effective on 1 January 2006. Texas Parks & Wildlife gave a “grace period” for issuing citations from 1 January 2006 until 1 January 2007. The grace period is now over.

Any commissioned law officer can issue a citation for a class C misdemeanor if you are caught riding without a Texas OHV decal on lands where they are required. Failure to comply with the provisions of this law constitutes a Class C misdemeanor and could result in the OHV operator being issued a citation. Fines for this offense range from $25 to $500.

You can find more information on to the Texas OHV program at:

You can find more information on riding OHVs in the Sam Houston NF at:

Thanks for the clarification. Pete told me that you would have the answer.

Several weeks ago, I had looked every where on the forest's website for information on the sticker, to no avail. I spoke with all the guys that I ride with (most of which ride the forest a lot more than me), and no one seemed to know the details about teh stickers.
I then posted this question on Houstonmotocross.com, and the answer I got was what I put in my original post.

Likewise. I realy want to hook up with you guys one of these days, if work doesn't get in the way.

I haven't seen his 450X yet (other than the photos from his first Hare Scramble). If it is anywhere near as brutal as the 450r, it should be a fun bike!!!

yes you are right, i grew up riding the big bikes, trail/mx. Fiddys are a challenge and so much more fun, easier to hide behind a tree when security is looking for you. Plus, our fiddys do like 50mph:eek3:
