Michigan motorcyclist killed in U.S. 129 crash

By News Sentinel staff
June 24, 2007

MARYVILLE - A Michigan motorcyclist died Saturday afternoon in a crash on the curvy stretch of road known as the Tail of the Dragon.

Brian Robert Raguso, 32, of Jackson, Mich., was riding a 2004 Harley-Davidson north on U.S. Highway 129 around 2:15 p.m. when he tried to pass another vehicle, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The motorcycle crashed into a 1996 Nissan driven by Billy J. Davis, 29, of Knoxville.

The Nissan's rear end ran off the right side of the road, and a 2005 Ford Focus driven by Deana Sparks, 24, of Knoxville, hit the car on the left side, according to the THP.

The Nissan's bumper swung into the northbound lane, where it knocked over another Harley-Davidson driven by Betty Martin, 50, of Braselton, Ga., according to the THP. The crash killed Raguso and injured Davis and his passenger, Paige Skinner, 15, of Knoxville, along with Sparks and Martin. The extent of their injuries wasn't clear Saturday night.

Raguso and Martin wore helmets. Davis and Sparks wore seat belts.

No charges are expected in the crash, according to the THP.

Be careful out there!

Passing on the Dragon is downright dangerous... especially on a slow motorcycle with a 15 year old passenger, its straight-up stupid!

Read the article again... the 15YO passenger was in a cage.

No argument with passing on the Dragon, though.

It's also sad that his failed passing attempt nearly killed another motorcyclist and possibly the cagers.

extremely, I wonder how many other close calls he had that day:BangHead:
these daily mtorcycle related deaths will bring about a nationwide turn on how motos will be viewed/ allowed/ governed with more rules etc etc etc

Incredibly DANGEROUS!!! With 318 curves in 11 miles, the Tail of the Dragon is the most challenging motorcycle road in the U.S. We'll be testing it out in May 2008.

When it comes to Harley, everyone shrug a shoulder and move on. If it's a sportbike, then yeah it was a squid move and high rated speed.:angry7:
V-rod are just as fast as a 600 or even faster.

Just spent a week in the vicinity of the dragon. It is hairpin, followed by hairpin. Not really a fun road IMHO because the turns are too tight and unless you can remember 318 different turns you can't be sure, as you go around a blind corner, how sharp it will be.
We saw 3 bikes down in 3 passes thru Deal's Gap. One was a 1098 Ducati.
And we were threatened with a $600 ticket for speeding up to the scene of an accident (we couldn't see it until we were right on it cause the road is too curvy).
We found the Cherahala Skyway to be more fun and the scenery is better than the dragon. It's 50 miles of sweeping turn after sweeping turn with scenic pulloffs every mile or two. The blueridge Parkway is also sweet but we got rain so didn't get far on it.
Be careful out there. The danger is real.

Kawi 6R - 1/4 mile - 10.84 @ 129.00

HD V-Rod 1/4 mile - 11.31 @ 115.00

Less than half a second in the 1320'

Good jockey would give you a run.

I posted the article on another forum I visit and this is what I found out . . .

He died on a VRod. He was an active poster at 1130cc.com.

He wasn't on the Dragon, just on 129. The stretches before and after offer plenty of passing lanes.

Here's a pic . . .

Thus, he more than likely was wearing a helmet. My prayers go out to all family and friends of a motorycle rider who's lost their life doing what the enjoy -- riding on two wheels.

Maybe off the line then no. it's a 600# bike.
