i recently bought one at sports authority.

it is nice to have a cold drink whenever you want on a long ride. it also helped keep me a little cooler since the bag stays cool and its strapped to your back.

i have a question for those who own one. how do you clean and dry it out?

They sell a cleaning kit for about 10 bucks. I don't have one.. I just rinse mine and hang it in front of a fan to dry. Use something to keep the bladder walls separated.

I used to always put Gatorade in mine until I heard that this can become a sticky mess even if you clean it so now I fill it with water most of the time and only sometimes with Gatorade.

Usually, I just rinse it out with warm water, then stick a cooking spoon into it so it won't close on me and leave it upside down to dry. Having a hook near the sink helps. If it does have sticky Gatorade in it, I flip it inside out, poke the corners out and scrub it with a sponge and dishwashing liquid. In bad cases (forgetting to clean it out right away and its been a few days) I do recommend filling it up with bleach in hot water and let it soak for an hour, then scrub it inside out.

My boyfriend has a cleaning kit that I started using now and it makes things a lot easier and the little plastic thing for drying the bag does come in very handy!

The site is for bicycle riders but this is the cleaning kit designed for camelbaks.

The looooooong brush is essential for cleaning the tube. Especially if you have the insulated cover for the tube so you don't see it, it can get funky without you knowing. I've used this site for years and their service is excellent.

+1 on the brush but there is also a kit that has the big plastic holder in it. If you can find that one, it is even better.

I can also vouch for nashbar.

camelbaks are teh awesome.

which one did you get?

their website is awesome. most catalouges and stores only have a couple of models, but their website has a hundred or so!

there is one i want called the transformer. it has a basic camelbak, and also has detachable small and a large cargo bags, that can be used in any combination. best of all worlds!

oh. camelbak also makes some tablets you can use to make a cleaning solution. IMO, bleach water would work just as well. the tablets might come in handy if you use it for camping.

I have the tablets (10 for $6?) and they're simple to use and small enough to carry one or two with you on the road.

Well, you won't want to land on it - I landed on mine (soft landing) and the bag leaks now if I fill it over 75% or if it lays down. They aren't meant to stand up to much abuse.

Sounds like you need a new bladder for it, I only fill mine with ice/water & after use I flush it with very hot water (& dish soap once in a while) then hang it to dry.

i rinse it out after use (even with gatorade or my energy supplement "hammer gel" - more than 3 years now and no sticky mess)

if i forget to rinse it out and grow algae, i rinse it out really well and put bleach in there. it kills off everything, then i rinse it out reall well.

they have been known to save mt. bikers who go over the bars and land on their backs...the bladder breaks and cushions the fall.

yeah i don't want to land on mine either. when i first bought mine. on the package itself it said "so durable, a car and park on top of it!" im guessing if you slowing roll the car on it, it won't pop. With Sudden weight all in 1 second i guess it will pop. Poor Advertising :eh:

When we go on SMRs, I fill it up with ice and water the night before and put the entire bag (including straps and all) into the fridge. In the early morning hours, I just pull it out and swing it over my back. It stays nice and cool for an extended period of time and before I had my hard CE-backprotector in, I could feel it and it also kept my back cool for a while.

yeah but could you imagine riding in the 100 degree weather and feeling like it's only 70 or 80 degrees? If I had the change laying around, I'd pick one up just to see how well it works. Too bad it weighs 10lbs fully loaded, though I'm guessing that is for the hydration model. I wonder how much the cooling only model weighs?

How come you all use bleach to clean the water bags? I just use a little dish soap and hot water. Never fill it with anything other than ice and water though.

i guess cuz i have also let mine sit in my truck all week after a mt bike race and it grew nasty lifeforms. the bleach got rid of it all. plus bleach is easier to rinse out than soap...when i used soap i couldn't get all the soap out.

If it gets 'gunky', bleach will kill the bacteria and fungus that has grown in it. Mine hasn't gotten that bad either but I've seen them nasty before and then it was a case for Bleach for sure. :laughing6
