"The argument for secession is that the U.S. has become an empire that is essentially ungovernable — it's too big, it's too corrupt and it no longer serves the needs of its citizens," said Rob Williams, editor of Vermont Commons, a quarterly newspaper dedicated to secession.
"We have electoral fraud, rampant corporate corruption, a culture of militarism and war," Williams said. "If you care about democracy and self-governance and any kind of representative system, the only constitutional way to preserve what's left of the Republic is to peaceably take apart the empire."
hell ya! make texas its own country while you're at it. I volunteer to be the dictator!

I believe there are (and have been) a few Pro secession groups here. Hell, we're already a sovereign state, might as well take another step and save our own asses and let the rest of America rot with our "genius" congress.

Have any of you ever been to VT?
The roads are OUTSTANDING and for the half of the year it's thawed out enough to ride, it's a mecca for bikes.
I'd move there!

I believe this is still the best country in the world. Trust me- it could be ALOT worse. But I see the point of the secession threat- and agree with the fact that we are no longer "For the people, by the people"... instead We are becomming "for the Gov't, by special interest groups, for the welfare of the filthy rich" (example: oil companies sticking it right up our asses)- but I think reform would be better then nationwide division... I agree we need to take control back from the government. Its actually a worse problem then many people realize. Take for instance social security- what right does the Gov't have to force you to "invest in your own future" by deciding how to invest OUR money... thats absolute fraud. And we all know our Gov't is terrible with money managment.

Secessionist movements are typically conservative in nature. The driving force behind seccessionist ideology is that the current government has grown too powerful, omnipotent and overzealous. Secessionists see the vacation of the Union as a means to establish a new and more limited government.
Conservative thinking is that the smaller the government the better. In today's world though, conservatism has taken on a different slant. Nowadays we think conservative values are those akin to bible beating Republicans who love guns and hate taxes.
Really, they just love minimal governmental interference.
I guess this misperception is the reason why people balk when I tell them that I'm a Conservative Hippie.
I hate drug laws but love guns
I'm pro-choice but pro death penalty
I don't think the U.S.A. should meddle in other countries' affairs but I won't tolerate the resulting terrorism.
I hate illegal immigration but I grew up with illegal immigrants (some of my best friends).
When I lived in the country I hated cops. Now I live in the city and I REALLY appreciate them (sometimes).
I hate paying taxes that go to some dead-beat's welfare check but will readily hook up a homeless person with the last of my cash.
I wouldn't join the Army but do believe that we should maintain the most kick-ass squad on the block.
I think it's stupid that we actually have a TOLERANCE LEVEL for alcohol while driving, but pot is 100% illegal.
Republic of Texas FTW

The article listed in the original post says that Vermont is a left leaning state that last year elected a socialist to the senate.
Seems somewhat liberal to me. :icon_smil
