No, this is not a Democracy it is a Republic. The United States has always been a Republic.
Technically the United States is a Constitutional Republic,

Strange enough many people forget that ... "...and the Republic for which it stands ..."
California's majority voted that Gay people do not have the right to be married ... is that right? California's majority voted that children of illegal aliens do not have the right to a public education ... just imagine what would have happened if the court didn't step in and overrule that vote.
Simply doing what the majority wants is not a Democracy ... and it certainly isn't a Republic ... that's a mob, and the Founding Fathers knew and understood that very kneenly.

In some ways it's better. A country ruled by the mob is no country. Sometimes .... sometimes the right thing is not what everyone wants. And sometimes the people we elect don't do what we elected them to do ... which is why every 2 years we get to remove some of them from office and replace them with others.

No that is called voter apathy. People don't vote then wonder why things suck.
Lets try expressing ourselves at the polls instead of bitching around the waterfountain at work. If the mass majority was out in the streets raising hell it would be different.
We are richer that we think and so we sit in our houses and think why should I get involved? I make a decent living, things aren't that bad, it could be worse and when it gets worse they will let us know. In the mean time we get higher taxes, Katrina refugees that won't leave, 15,000 illegals a week, and industry leaving in droves to go to China.
What happens when most of our heavy industry is offshore? Our economy becomes based on services, McDonalds and ,in the near future, agriculture (for the ethanol). We quickly become a backwater nation that while not third world is at least no longer an economic powerhouse. China and the European Union becoming stronger trading partners and the US gets cut out of the loop.
Go vote.

Bumblebee hit dead on ... voter apathy will be the down fall of this country ... term limits for senators and reps would help as well.
This system only works when the people are involved.

If the real question is whether our elected representatives are doing thieir duty in working in the best interest of our country and thier constitutes, I'd say NO. The dollar means more than integrity these days.

This is a long and complicated explination. I can't even figure how to summarize it.

Most people have no idea who is who or what they stand for- the important thing though is we all need to vote. If you dont know who to vote for just vote against the person that currently holds that office. This is the only way to keep senators/congressmen from getting "comfortable" and milking the system. Its the only way to enforce term limits since we dont have them in congress. The fact that congress has no term limits is the reason nothing ever changes- the same reason the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The same reason they vote themselves raises across the board- pay no social security tax- and have lifelong benefits (paid by our tax dollars) after serving for only 2 terms in office. Also the reason they all make 6 figures plus and make decisions for those of us that will never see 6 figures in our lifetime. These are the same individuals that have failed to control the monopoly of the oil companies by allowing the 6 largest oil co.'s to merge... wanna know why we are getting our asses pounded at the pump? Cause now there is no competition to force prices back down.
Bunch of crooks- so keep the revolving door moving... or even better you can read up on the individuals on the ballot and make a more "educated" decision.
